I am really interested in the era as well... I plan on building a 30s ford truck or car... when Im done with the f100... I have always been a fan of the cars/trucks of the 60s but now im getting more and more into the hot rod culture of the day. Rod and kulture magazine is one of my favorite...

Man, there's so many options, I went with chrome reverse wheels, old Ansen knock offs and thin whites, redlines would work too, right now I'am completeing a set Ansen 5-spokes with blackwalls so I can switch them around.

  7. Shiny black painted wheels with baby moons and skinny whites. Big and littles. Paint that truck Texaco red instead of rat rodz flatz. DO use that Joe's logo. In the sixties flat black was primer. Used only until paint was applied. Nice project. Very cool thing to honor your pop.

Hey! Here's a good idea! Ask your father about this. Bet he remembers...

In the late 60's, and still in High School, I had a set of baby moons on the stock blue wheels of my 55 Chevy. To change things up, I'd put on a set of trim rings with the moons or I would run two of the DeSoto spinner hub caps with no hub caps on the rear wheels. I was lucky to have gas and hamburger money.

  11. It was all a matter of means. If you were cash strapped you ran gloss black stock wheels with narrow whitewalls. If your daddy was buying you had cragers or keystones with redlines or some other color. The more money the better wheels. We got cheeter slicks from the recap shop for $25.00 each and were in heaven until winter came back.

Yeah for me personally... I dont want to spend a but load... I had even contemplated taking a set of 20 inch dodge black steel wheels and putting a truck tire on it ... not a skiny tire....chrome bullet push through and bullet caps.... but got ripped a new one for that! some guys liked the idea... while purist didnt.. but i could pick up a wheel for 50 bucks easy. nice set of blems for less than a 100.... ehh.. well.. it would be differnent.. but traditional ... no.

I liking the reverse offset wheels ... they look really nice...

Where wide whites popular very much in the 60s? I have been reading a bit about this.. and seems like alot of the 60s era cars im seeing had thin white walls and even some having 2 thin white walls. DBtires has some of these... the look nice.

Thin whites - only wide whites I remember in the mid to late '60s were on some show cars, classics and a few Caddys.

O yea, I just looked at my avatar - pic from about '66

Chrome reverse are prolly the coolest, seems like even all my cousins even had them on their 60's cars back in the 70's. Also the cheapest wheel too back then, I'm sure. I picked up a set at a swap meet about 15 years ago for $10 a piece.

    Reversed chromies and whites!!!

  17. I started driving in 62 and never ran wide white walls on anything. There were some dual line and tripple line narrow white walls even dual line with hash marks between them.
We made a set of reverse rims by drilling out the rivets reversing the center used bolts to align then welded the center in. They were not perfectly straight but not bad, they ran well. They were painted gloss black. Paint was cheep.

We've always been partial to slots and spokes, or steelies and spokes. (I know it's not a hotrod, but it shows our wheels)

I grew up in so. fl. and can remember being about 13 or 14 in '67-'68 time period. One day when I was at the Jr. High school an older guy pulled up in a '55 Chevy; it was in grey primer,no front bumper, hood ornaments chaved, chrome reverse wheels, black wall tires, and small metal flake steering wheel. I was hooked on cars from that day forward.
It seems to me that very shortly after that chrome reverse became extinct; you just never saw them much. During that time I saw also a lot of baby moons.
Cragars became popular and also aluminum slots by late 60's early 70's. I can't say whether this was typical of the entire county

  26. Yeah, & imagine a couple of ME109s or FW190s raking the ship with MG fire while you're nearly freezing off your gotchas! Looking forward to a ride in one myself, hoping the Yankee Lady will be around the area this summer. Sorry bout the OT but those old forts were really something, along with the crews who flew and fought in 'em.

Chrome reverse were on everything in the 60's where I live.....also a lot of just black.....the odd time you'd see Torque thrusts.....a lot of guys would reverse their own wheels and paint them black with baby moons....that was a solid performance look......

Were Radirs on a lot of cars in the early to mid 60's? I have been itching to get rid of the ones that are on my roadster and replace them with American Spokes out back and Chrome Steelies up front. Any thoughts?
