On the journey towards a new paint job. . .Here's where I left off, for those who may be following the previous thread. . .

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=312913

At the time of my last post, for those interested, I had finished both rear quarter panels, deck lid.

With vacation time and some much needed warm weather this week, I was able to get back on schedule with what feels like the never ending project to get paint on my car before Round-Up.

Spent Tuesday dechroming her, with my Dad's help. . .
Soon discovered that the geniuses who designed the Edsel thought it would be a good idea to place bolts in the most ri****ulous of places, requiring one to climb inside the engine compartment in order to remove exterior chrome

Was screaming obscenities that would make most HAMBer's blush at this point.. .although it does look like the Edsel is trying to eat me here. . .:D

    P***enger side dechromed. . .only 5 hours of work. . .

Then after 2 1/2 solid days of sanding, and sanding, and sanding, and realizing that I'm too freakin' short to reach the middle of my hood (hence my "creative" sanding approach ;)) got her down to completely bare metal. . .(Oh, and the shirt reads "Unruly Subordinate". . .because I'm sure someone is gonna ask about that . . .)

Overall, VERY VERY fortunate in terms of rust pockets, dings, dents, etc. . .

So far, other than the bottom of the fender well, which needs to be completely cut out (which I was aware of before), some light skimming for the hood, and a couple of pinholes here and there, she's incredibly solid.

Will need to weld in some holes where the side mirrors were (apparently the originals had been replaced at some point, because I've got 4 holes instead of 2, which of course, were covered up by the old mirrors), and fill the "EDSEL" and "Ranger" emblem holes before final paint.

So now, she's almost there. . .have the 2 driver's side doors, driver's side front fender, rear bumper and front grill/bumper, to complete, couple of days of metal work, then 7,427 hours of block sanding, then paint. . .

    Here's how she looks now. . .

How many days left til' Round-Up? ;):D

Looking good Frankie! When I had that car, I thought about rearranging the EDSEL letters on the side to say "SLED". My only critique is the area around the front bumper. Are you going to pull the bumper at some point and finish off that area too? Gotta say, my old girl looks good. Can't wait to see the final result.

Thanks Dart!! That makes me happy. . .I love "our" grrl :D;)

She is lookin' fiiiiiinnnnneeee. . .:D

We're gonna pull rear and front bumper at the same time; take care of all of that at once, right before we shoot the body colour. . .at that point, she'll be totally off the road, and I'd rather only take the bumpers off once, rather that taking them off, puttin' em back on, takin' them off again, puttin' em back on. . .

I hate doing extra work :D

That's good advice. My car was rusty behind the front bumper (and everywhere else) and it was worth the time to pull the front bumper and trim off to clean that area up.

That car has a great body on it, really solid, surprised to see that. I know all about those hidden clip locations too, they're some tricky *******s.

If your Ranger scripts are nice I'll buy them off of you, I have some but mine are really pitted. And thanks for the offer on the grille center a couple weeks ago but I did find one so I'm all set.

  7. WTG Frankie! Heck of a job you are doing there girl. No ***** waist here. So, we finally got to meet Dad! Hello Mr. Frankie! Looking good Frankie, can't wait to see it done. And yes, Audrey is real solid.

Yes, trying to start a trend. Watch for them to start appearing all over the country on girlie Kustoms everywhere. I have a patent. I'm going to market them in pink, silver, and polka-dots. Don't steal my idea ;):D

Maybe you could primer your fingernails as a status-indicator to show in what progress-condition your car is currently... :D

I have roughly the same problem, so I just took the hood off and sit in the bay with the engine to do my underhood work. Luckily I've got no windshield right now so I can sit on the dash to work on the roof. :D

When I first bought that car, I couldn't believe how solid it was. I bought it for $1500 and drove it 20 miles home. After digging around under it for a while, the only real rust I found was behind the front tires. I love Texas.

I ended up selling that car to a schmuck who eventually sold to Frankie. I'm so damned happy she ended up with it. She and that car have become inseparable. They belong together :D

LOL! Then I would have grey nails until sometime in March ;)

Busted a knuckle, scabbed up a finger pretty bad during the de-chroming/sanding process...

But I didn't break a single nail

Super nice work. Yup, prep is everything. Glad to see you are taking the time to do it that way, will look like a million bucks because of the effort.
No one will care more than you on how it comes out, so why not do it yourself. :)

Poor girl has no face....Mabey we can take up a collection.

    Dang, you are committed!
I'm proud of you and I'm glad I took the "patina" way out on mine!

I liked the christmas grille theme but we do need to come up a better grille for you. Mine is spoken for, however.

Thanks ken1939. . .You are SO right. . .PREP IS EVERYTHING. . .taking a lot more time and effort than I originally planned, but I'd much rather do it right than have it come back to haunt me in a couple of years. . .

I do have a face. . .but I also have friends who are lousy at takin' pics ;)

This is awesome. you probably mentioned it, and I missed it, but... what are the plans for final paint design? Solid color? 2 tone? Panel? Scallops? Flames?

Just looking at the body lines with the car in primer and no trim, I notice body line I've never seen before that would be a killer opportunity for a Watson-style panel job.
