http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Two-Dead-After-Small-Aircraft-Crashes-in-Denton-County.html Bad news, Steven .. THUNDERROCKET -- everyone ok there ? CHECK IN PLEASE
I have an old friend that flies out of there. Hope it's not him. I helped him build a Scamp bi-plane back in the 70's. VW Revmaster engine. Very nice but small experimental plane.
I haven't heard anything.....but neither of Stevan or Barbara's planes are currently able to fly.....so they probably weren't in the plane... Ok, just talked to Stevan. Wasn't him. Some guy from another airport that wasn't the best pilot apparently.
Stevan said the p***enger was just some guy that had been asked aboard....he probably didn't wake up this morning knowing he was going to get in a plane. If there's one thing I've picked up from Stevan about that, it's that flying is some serious ****....you better know what you're doing.
It was a Nanchang CJ from Aero Valley. 52F They were flying a flight of three, and this was lead aircraft. Looks like he tried to tighten up to make one six, and stalled a wing, turning final. They were low and impacted the ground at vertical. There were 2 souls on board, both fatal. http://cbs11tv.com/local/fatal.plane.crash.2.899387.html Thanks for all the calls and post checking up on us. These accidents happen so infrequent, if it had been a car accident the media would have not even reported it. Eric, The Cherokee is fully airworthy and so is Barbara. The 1949 Swift is not in annual due to the few hours we are putting on the Piper. Annuals are expensive.
Its sad to hear about things like this, my thoughts go out to the family's and Friends of the lost aviators. Plane crashes are never a nice thing to be a part of for the emergency crews either, have been medical response to a few crashes, so to do I feel for them. Just one thing though, was it an actual Yak 52 or a Nanchang CJ6? I cant tell from the pics? Doc.
It was a Nanchang CJ-6A. This has video of the formation, about 2 hours prior to accident. http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Two-Dead-After-Small-Aircraft-Crashes-in-Denton-County.html
One of the guys on board the plane was a friend and neighbor of mine. He was a pilot with a lot of time in the seat and a car guy. God speed and the best to his family. 33 coupe
Anyone hear any names let me know..i've got a buddy that rebuild old planes that lives out near there. Thank god You and barb are ok Steven.
The Medical Examiner's office has released the iden***y of the two on board the plane as Forest Johnson, 69, of Fort Worth and the p***enger, Larry Cotton, 61, of Double Oak.
Wow just got of the phone with James Harrell the current president of the early v8 CLub of Texas 1932 -1953 and ge confirmed that it was two old hot rodders that were in the plane. Larry Cotten was in the plane as well as another hot rodder that owned a 36 Ford. Larry Cotten once served as president of the early V8 Club of Texas This is sad sad news more hot rodders taken by tragedy Rusty
Hey guys I just ran across this site by accident and had to comment on the discussion. Forrest Johnson is my uncle, sorry to say I did not know Mr. Cotton but am very saddened for his families loss. My uncle has been flying since the mid 70s and has been flying the plane that crashed for a very long time as well. He was a very experienced, careful and respected pilot. He was retired and even spent his time off flying cancer patience down to San Antonio and other places. Someone above mentioned his 36. He purchased the 36 Roadster back in 1957 as his first car and did a 1950s hot rod job on it back then, however he kept all the original parts. He was in the middle of a frame off restoration when this happened. He also has two Mercury convertibles, one in the late 40s and one in the early 50s, a really cool low miles unrestored early 60s T-Bird that he purchased from the original owner that is sharp, a very low miles ZR1, one of the first to come out and a Delorian, however the older cars were his p***ion. We had a blast out at the original old Pate Swap meet back in the 80s and early 90s. Sorry to ramble but I just thought I needed to tell what kind of a guy he was.
