Could some one point me to a parts interchange . I want to get rid of the TBI and computer and use 6cyl GM HEI and a four barell carb. my motor is a 99 4.3 V6 Thanks dirt t
mid 80s astro van. You need to swap a 4 pin module into the HEI. But I don't know if this old stuff will work on a 99.
I've got an older (88) TBI model 4.3 that is going to scrap on Monday. If you need anything off of it, let me know ASAP and I'll save it. I don't know if the intake would do you any good to get it 'older' than your 99 or not. If need be, I'll pull the engine off the trailer and hold it for the week.
Use Edelbrock intake #2111 (L35 heads) or #2114 (vortec heads). As Squirrel stated use older HEI with 4 pin module & if you leave the roller cam in it make sure you use the proper dist. gear. MSD makes some nice dists also for non EFI V-6 applications.
Dirt T, I just went through this exercise, My 4.3 has a 99 or newer short block,86 Vortec heads and I am now looking for a non computer dist. The early heads allowed me to use a early ( pre 85 iron 4 barrel intake). I'm also using a early short water pump because I've gone to a V belt drive system to get rid of the surpintine belt. Most V8 out side parts will work with this engine. this whole set up is backed up to a TH 350 and is now setting in my 26 Ford lakes modified. Hope this helps ...........Jack
The block on these motors have not changed from day 1 except for a extra hole in the sie of the block. Edelbrock makes a intake for these to run a carb. I think one can be bought through GM performance parts as well. The heads on your motor will be more desirable for performance compared to earlier ones. Switching to a earlier belt setup should be a bolt on deal. You should also be able to find a aftermarket dist.
You need 4.3 parts? I have 2 intakes...Check this out... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=320494 I also have a new set of V6 Holley Valve covers in the box...
I've been running an '87 4.3 and 700R4 from a junk Astro since 1994, about 75k miles. I took off the throttle body intake and used a 1985 pickup 4bbl. intake, qudrajet and HEI that was retrofitted to work without computer. I can provide the GM numbers for the parts needed. It produces adequate power in 2700 pound car and gets 23+ mpg with the bad Model A aero shape. The newer 4.3 - 1996+ have different intake bolt pattern, with the center bolts being vertical to the horizon, rather than perpendicular to the mating surface with the head. Also, the newer -1992+ block does not have a boss for the stock chev mechanical fuel pump. Sanderson offers headers, Edelbrock has intake manifolds and carbs. Here's a hop up article from several years ago: http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/113_0208_chevy_43l_262ci_v6_engine_build/index.html Good luck, let us know how this works out. Phil

wwwwrongo! the vortecs have a counterbalance shaft running right thru the lifter vally. and it will hit the bottom of a tbi intake. i don't know about the carb intakes...
The early ones had flat tappets, and the later ones are rollers, I believe. I've got 3 of them. One is torn down to rebuild, that is an 86 with the stock 4 bbl intake, and a mechanical fuel pump. I have a 90 TBI, which had a part of a tree land on the truck a couple of weeks ago. And an 03 which has more "stuff" on it than the space shuttle. I took the top ring off of the 86's pick up coil, and swapped it onto a V8 hei along with the main shaft and cap to use without a computer, once I finish rebuilding the rest of it. I do wonder if V8 alternator brackets will work on it, as it was missing that part of it when I got it. The crank pully is made for V belts and a single flat belt, but the flat belt wasn't hooked to anything when I got it. Good Luck.
Dave, Regarding the alternator brackets, the first decision is whether you are going to use the original 'long' water pump, or the earlier 'short' water pump from a SBC. Once that is decided, the appropriate (to match long or short water pump) SBC alternator brackets should bolt up.
That's good to know. I've got a bunch of long water pump related stuff to choose from, so I'll try the mix and match on the brackets. Thanks! Dave
I have a '90, from a S-10, took off the TBI and used a Edelbrock intake, and a Rochester 2g. Got a HEI off e-bay, it went in like normal, but I have not fired the motor yet, how do I know if it's got the right dist. gear on it? Don't mean to hi-jack the thread.
As mentioned The marine industry used these engines a lot ( volvo penta/mercruiser) great source for cams, intakes, distributors etc. They make a 4bbl intake that bolts to the vortec heads, and can be had fairly cheap. If you want to go with a tbi set up just use a adapter for tbi to 4bbl manifold summit has them.
Chota, I checked my 4.3 dist. it has the same 13 tooth gear as the V8 dist. has. In fact I used a V8 HEI dist. to check firewall clearance on my 26 modified, found out it was too big. I'm still waiting on a small dia. 6 cyl. dist. ...........Jack
