  1. well, since i've been back, most of the aviation places have been off,, or not hiring until after the first...the army shuts down for xmas exodus, so i've been in unemployment limbo...

what better thing to do than work on the hot rod?? i'm cheap and moneys always tight, so the car only gets the last priority when money is involved, so most of what i use is cheap, free, or forgotten!!! if you read my other post, i've got the grille shell mostly done!!

so next i began to work on the flooring... i took 1" square tubing and made my perimeter, then i used more of the 60 chevy that gave up it's nose for my grille shell, and banged out a trans tunnel. i made a posterboard template, then transfered that to the hood. i cut that out of metal, then screwed it to an old stump i had and began to swing away!! i got to the shape and radius i needed, then flipped it over and hammered it" mostly smooth" i really should build an english wheel!!

next i cut up a trailer fender i got at tractor supply to make the front of the tunnel that covers the bell housing. it has a nice rounded edge on one side that worked perfectly!!

i installed that in and got it welded up!! a little grinding and i think that'll work!

next, since foot space is at a premium, my pedals are gonna be a bit of a chore...i got a manual pedal assembly from a later model ford truck...i will adapt this to fit a 60-63 chevy dual set up. when i "test fit" them into the cab, i needed them over to the left as far as i can get um! i cut of a bit of the mount, and got it where i needed it.

next, the pedal pads needed a bit of rearranging...i cut both pads off and swapped them side to side.

i just tacked them on, as i'll probably just cut em off and weld a piece of tubing so i can bolt up a custom pedal.

so after that i decided to give myself a bit more heel room and aid in making room for the throttle pedal...i'm gonna build a vw style roller pedal cause i like the way they work and feel!
i got a piece of the trailer fender where it was flat ( it's the kind of fender that covers two wheels) opposite the rolled edge is a 90degree break which was perfect for clearing my frame rail. i measured out what i needed and cut it out.

next i measured and cut the other side. then i cut the "bottom" out, and got the angle to fit the floor. i tacked this together, and will finish weld it when i flip the cab over to weld up the bottom.

i took that and tacked it into the floor frame.

^^^^ here you can see the pedals swapped for more travel clearance ^^^
    [IMG]

it fits great and gives me a comfortable foot position for throttle and braking!! i added anothe piece of that old hood to finish the floor back to where the seat will be.. i happy with the outcome and will finish weld and grind it all out when i pull the cab off....

so that's where i'm at so far....i'll build my roller pedal tonite and update with pics!!!

hope i didn't waste your time!!:)

Looking forward to seeing this in person some day. I really like that dash and your choice of headlights. My first thought was the grill shell was some modified Edsel collar until you mentioned a 60 Chevy. Keep em coming.

    Matt,
Welcome home! I talked to Richard and he told me you were back, but haven't seen anything on here to confirm your return. Shoot me an e-mail at garrycarter@satx.rr.com and I'll give you an update + pix on the `30. Right now I'm trying to figger out AC and heater hoses (yep...I'm so old I need both) as a prelim to wiring. I still need my bud to show up and do stereo/sat radio. Otherwise we'll be cruisin' Austin with nothing to listen to but each other.

Thanks for the descriptive steps on that floor/foot recess/box/thingie. My 27 has a bit of a clearance room problem for my left knee vs my sprint car-style steering wheel. If I can just lay my foot in a little box like that, it would make turning corners just a bit safer.

go get em lil brother!!!!! killer...

  17. i knew i had more pics...

i had to cut room for the driveshaft to pass through the back wall, but i wanted to retain the bodyline around the hole...i marked the cut...

then, to retain the bodyline, i got creative...

the wagons rolled edge helps to keep the bodyline, and i'll use the rest of the wagon to continue along the bottom of the back wall.....why bother with all this you ask????
    TILT BED!!! HA HA

with the front and underside of the "bed" being viewable, i want these areas just as nice as the outside

i took the "bed" off and flipped it over... i added a piece to the front lower edges to give them a finished look and feel...

on the front edge i welded 1/4" rod to the front edge to help tie in the back wall and side walls. it'll also give it a finished edge when reaching around it...

here you can see the lower edge on the sides, and how the rod will help flow into the back wall when the bodywork is done.

i continued with the rod all around the cutouts for the axle, but i can't find the pics...

i used an old 33 truck cab wall on the bad as the window opening is exactly the width of the frame!! so, there ya go...up to speed......now i gotta go get to work!!!

  18. Nice use of creative "scraps". Is your kid pissed about the wagon or are you carrying at the swaps now?

Interesting project you got going there. Are you going to tilt you headlight buckets to the side to mimic the Mercury taillight area or leave them as pictured? I take it this is a sixtes style show truck project? I like some of your details.

This is a really slick truck, I'm digging the overall look of the front end, I can't place it but it looks familiar. Nice to see something different that flows together well.

  23. i thought about tilting them to mimic the taillights, but i dunno. i mocked it up like that and it looks really crazy..we'll see

On the Chevy truck master, clutch cylinder do you know which is best to use? Year maybe? I had a friend look up part numbers and 60 to 67 there is like 9 different numbers. My next project is due to have 3 pedals and I already have a set of 60's truck pedals. By the way kick ass truck have you thought as far as color yet?

  25. it's a dual cluth/brake thing..60 to 63 only i believe...all trucks with manuals...

as for color...only one way to go...PAGAN GOLD!!!
