Got a Flaming River Vega steering box and I was trying their 6in pitman arm on for fit and saw that the shaft is tapered ( around 40 those.) and the splined hole in the arm isn't. It only goes on about a 1/4 in. Call Flaming River and tech guy says that's how they are and to just tighten the Hell out of the nut and give it 120 ft.lbs.
I don't think that's going to fit together too good . Does anyone make a better fitting arm? I'd feel a lot safer

That doesn't sound right to me. Every oem steering box (modern) that I have ever had the pitman arm off had tapers in both the shaft and arm.

I've used several of them, and never had a problem. I think they are straight splined so you can use them with the draglink on top or bottom of the pitman arm.

The speedway I used last was the same way...

I don't know who makes one different.

Yes you could mount the drag link on either side of the arm, but I'm not liking the fit of the arm to the sector shaft of the box.

BTTT for the night crowd. Has anyone else run into this problem? I don't think it's workable fit.

  6. why not use an original vega pitman arm. you can heat it and bend it flat , or any angle you want....then retaper the end for an old ford tie rod end

FR do some strange stuff !! the pitman arm should be tapered , Magnum /TCI will fit it is tapered correctly , don't force it on you'll screw up the spline !! tapered tie rod hole can be tapered both sides 1/2 way through & is on some I buy .

  8. Did you try inverting the pitman arm?

If it's the common aftermarket blanchard ground pitman arm it is tapered.

Hard to see in the pic, but this is the pitman arm style I'm talking about.

Check to see if there's a burr on either the pitman shaft or arm.

If you have one of the aftermarket arms similar to mine you should find that the tie rod end is tapered from both directions so no probs there....

No burr on the arm. If you inside mic it, it's the same on both ends. It will only go on the sector shaft about a 1/4 in. Thursday I'm taking the 45 min. ride over to Berea,Ohio to Flaming river and putting it on the counter and having them mount the arm and ask them if they would drive a car with that steering set-up. I'm not driving it.

I've got a vega box with an aftermarket arm and it fits as you described, the nut/washer holds it in fine.

Flaming river is still in town here I think. Id take the parts that they sold you over there and tell them to show you how they are suppose to go together. The guy on the phone that you talked to sounds like a flip to me.
