Bloody Luxury! We lived in rolled up newspaper bottom of a lake. Woke up and licked the road clean every day! For breakfast we rubbed gravel in our hair. Kids today don't believe ya...
here,s another one, was covered in a TV program just yesterday, http://jalopnik.com/cars/retro/grea...38-bugatti-type-57c-atalante-coupe-260775.php sold for 900k as is, and then was just touched up and running, and isnt going to be restored!
Glad I did a search for this. I am the only guy on my job who likes old cars,so this is all I heard about today. Of course, everybody's info was incorrect,LOL...The guys I work with don't know the difference between a Lowrider and a Custom! I have to put up with "how's your Lowrider coming along!". DUMBASSES!!! After reading the article,my first thought was,why doesn't the nephew keep the car? Then I saw "the money will be split between the relatives",and my question was answered. What usually happens, and I speak from experience,is that the rest of the family, who know nothing about cars,or don't care, just want their share of the money. What's sad is that sometimes their is a guy who loves cars and doesn't have the money to buy out the rest of the relatives,so the car gets sold and lost to the highest bidder. My mom used to do Estate sales and would have to liquidate the assets of all kinds of people. Anytime there was any car stuff of motorcycle related stuff, she would call me and I would always bring CASH! I saw more than once,a family member try to buy back something that belonged to their mom or dad,and got out-bid! It was a sad thing to witness.
Even if you could keep it,you probably couldn't afford to restore it anyways! It would cost more than the price of MANY Hotrod builds,LOL....
Unbelievable. I cant wrap my mind around that number. Does your "specialty car" insurance policy cover a 4 million dollar car?
I dunno... I think I still prefer this 'barn find' story... http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1985029/posts
Not bad, the only cool things I found in my grandparents garage was an old Dietz lantern up in the rafters and an old toaster thats probably from the 30s or 40s.
yea, i remember that one. like, four years ago or so? seems i also remember a HAMBer buyin a shitload of stuff at that auction too. the pics in HRM couldnt have done that stash justice
It was never really lost. Quote out of the article, James Knight, international head of Bonhams' motoring department, said: "I have known of this Bugatti for a number of years and, like a select group of others, hadn't dared divulge its whereabouts to anyone. So it wasn't really "found"... But they are beautifull cars. Some random pics...
The Bugatti royale sold for 10 million a few years ago to the CEO of Domino's pizza .. A friend of mine has a Bugatti type 23 ... The Bugatti brother knew how to build a car. Back when they were building cars and you wanted one they would have you over for dinner. If they liked you they would build you one.
Designed to go 130 mph when most cars back then were lucky to reach 50-70. Simply simply beautiful. There is something that just stirs my soul about these prewar European cars.
Ettore Buggatti was was one man . He had sons, and a Daughter, His son Jean was a famous Furniture designer. Perhaps you mean the Shlumph Brothers ? http://www.schlumpf-collection.com/affaire-schlumpf-ang.html Over 20 years they bought as many Bugattis as they could find,in secret . I recall them buying one collection of 30+ cars from the US. In the mid 70's France was Gripped in a communist frenzy and the employees of the Schlumph Works took over the plant. They discovered several Hundred Bugattis and seized the whole lot as a sort of peoples retribution for percieved wrongs. Recently the French Government realized this was a terrible injustice and returned the 'reserve collection' to the remaining widow of the Shlumph brothers. This collection consisted of many cars which had been robbed of their ID plates and various parts. Most have been auctioned off. I am building a car at present for a family friend of the Schlumphs So I had a lot of the story first hand as it were . I see in the older parts of the thread everyone saying Jay leno would buy it,Sorry folks you have the wrong guy. Ralph Luaren is the big Bugatti fan .
I'm willing to bet that 95% of the "barn finds" that you read about in the mainstream media are not actual finds. The two Duesenbergs that Jay Leno "found" and this car being prime examples. If a dozen or so people know about a car, but can't do anything about it because the owner doesn't want to sell, the car is hardly "lost".
Further too that, the late doctor was actually doing his decendents a favour. By leaving them a car(s) he was saving them the problems associated with Death Duties in England. If he left them real estate most of it would have to be sold and they would get nothing. This way,They will all get a nice little bequest each. Plus, there will be no fighting over who gets what. He also left a huge collection of antique medical tools and artifacts.
Ralph Lauren already has one. He won't buy two. Cool car and cool find. About the family having a "car guy" in the heir list. Nope, was not the case. If any of his relatives were car guys they would have known about the car and not been so "suprised" when it was discovered on their own relative's property.
rollin' on some chrome reverse w/ baby moons and air bags it would fit right in. black primer 88 cents at W-M
If you did anything other than a complete restoration to an Atalante, then you should be shot by a 'real' firing line. The cost for a restoration like this isn't just in the actual rebuilding of the car, but also finding someone, and paying their price, to do the restoration. You would just take this to Tommy Joe down at Midas for some paint and body work.
