DeSoto Hemi/200-4R

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 345 DeSoto, Jan 6, 2009.

  1. Anybody had any experience with a 200-4R behind a 291 DeSoto Hemi...or for that matter ANY of the old Hemi's? I'm looking to use this with a 3.00:1 9" Ford Posi unit in a '32 Roadster. Also wondering what Carter or Edelbrock AFB to use with the Stock 4bl intake. I have an intake adapter plate for the later AFB/Edlebrock to WCFB intake. I've got the Stock WCFB, but would like to upgrade the carb and make it easier to set up the TV cable for the tranny...

A 500 or 600 CFM should work fine. The Carter/Edelbrocks are drilled for the small bolt pattern, just use the gasket & a drimmel/die grinder/end mill to open up the bore holes in the intake.

  3. 3.00:1 gears might be a bit much with an overdrive transmission , depending on your rear tire diameter. i would think something like 3.50-3.73 would be better

As 36-3W says, you'll probably have to change the rear gears if you want to use the 200R4 - go to www.currieenterprises.com - click on the center logo and then when the home page opens up, go to calculators on the right hand side to figure out your cruising rpm. With the current proposed setup, with a 28" tall tire, you'll be about doing 1700rpm at 70 mph - even less rpm if you have a lockup converter.

I use 3.89 rear end ratio with a 200R4 and lockup converter, 29" tires and cruise at 2100 rpm at 70 mph with a mild blower cam. You do not want to be cruising 'off cam'. Lockup converter drops your rpm a further 150-200 rpm. That's my real world experience.

  7. Have not even gotten to the tire size stage yet. I know I want the front and rear tires to be the same diameter...only fatter in the back and skinnier in the front. Even though the engine is a little 291, with an AFB, and the roller cam I have for it, I'm hoping the power will be up a bit from the Factory 200HP. My Jag 4.2 6 cylinder cruises nice at 1,900 with a 700-R4/lock-up converter @70 mph...

I put a 727TF smallblock behind my 291. Hot Hemi Heads sells the converter. A 904 lockup tranny should work also.

i've been running a 700r4 behind a 341 desoto in the sedan for 10 plus years. i'm running 3.89 gears with 31 1/2 in tires. the whole thing acts like it came from the factory that way. i think a 3.00 gear is not nearly enough gear unless you plan on running super short tires.
    good luck,
    dan
