BAD ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only thing better than a g***er is an altered wheel base car.
'Been cranking it up on the car the last weeks. Got alot done. Fitting up the quarters to make it look like nothing happened has been tough, but the end result made me blow a wad: The whole car is really starting to come together. I called in a favor on a buddy who has a real 1965 425 -horse 396 complete, sitting, waiting for the right car to link itself up to. I'm thinking this is the one. It'd be a total blow-away!! Date codes and stampings to match an altered like this one. How period correct are we gonna get????!!!!! Hope he says yes to the deal. Its a cool story on the how I found the engine for him many years back.....
Big Steve- How you doing, bud?? Check in with me soon. We're moving the 'Farm out to a stones throw from The Kennedy Brother's.
Dale you know what I think of this build so I am not even going to say anything except Congrats goes out to Dave and Pat. You guys have the right man for the job. P.S. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very cool! I've been lookin' for either a 2dr post Nova or a 65' 2+2 Mustang to do an AWB AF/X car out of. All the shoebox Nova's around here that I find are either 2dr hdtps or Convertibles... I did find a pair of wrecked 2+2 Mustangs but the guys price was way outta line. I want to do a Gas Rhonda inspired longnose... Now, I have a question. Someone just mentioned a fastback conversion on this. Does someone repop the old Bill Thomas body conversion for these shoeboxes? That would be f'n killer...
myself and john ((racerod)) were at the shop two weeks ago,,that car is super clean..ted and mike are real nice guys...anyway john is building a 63 posted car and i got the bug and just found a 63 altered wheel base car,, we are all just big kids ps buy there vidio
I never knew that was a body kit, I know there was only a few of the Nova's with that roof style that raced but I always thought it was a Rambler Marlin roof that was grafted onto the Nova to make them into a fastback like the Mustang.
Thats what I thought too. I know Bill Thompson made a front end kit that bolted to the firewall and came with a straight axle.
Vic- you guys were kick ***!!! Wished we all had more time to go out and grab a brew! But hey, we p***ed out kids gifts together at the NHRA cruise!!@!! You East coast guys always have an invite to the shop. Check your dates in March or so. We are gonna christen the new shop the right way, SoCal style. Taco carts, BBQ, and beer!!! And a few black stripes as well! No re-pops on the fastbacks yet. But don't let a '66 or '67 Coupe stop you. Shroeders Emerald Chevrolet sponsored coupe was one badd-azz injected car. Novas are still hot money these days. I'm trying to get a hold of a Comet Caliente or a '65 Falcon here local for the next cut/slash. In the mean time, the Dart is getting a new ,custom set of three step headers that should help the weak-knee'd 383 breath, until the monster 680-horse 410 c.i.d. gets bolted together, hopefully in time for the March Meet.
Yeah, I want to do a mustang too. Get a 347 from a mustang racer and replace the carb with a stack injector!!! On alcohol, it would fly. By the way the Chevy II looks bad ***.
Sound good Dale! I was going to stop by last week but work kept me running. If you need another truck and set of hands for the move Im in brother, just say the word and when?
Dave brought up the new Currie unit a couple days ago. It was to date the biggest question mark I've had so far with the build. By keeping the stock wheelhouses, and partially notching the framerails, with the monstrous Firestones I knew it was going to be tight. I could not resist, and before I left on Tuesday, I bolted the tires up to the axle to check clearances. I got it!! Thank heaven! A thumbs width all the way around! I've also come up with a "universal" idea on mounting the front perch mounts. This idea may be of use to future altered builders out there with a unibody set-up, and with the exception of the last tall order, trying to fit the stock fuel tank back in its stock location and provide enough clearance for the Chrysler Super Stock Springs(yikes, thats a mouth full!) I'll start on that tomorrow, and will bring in the camera for some pictures. Damn, even here in SoCal, its cold on that concrete and cardboard!!!
Here's a couple pics of what I came up with: By welding it up into the floorpan, and installing subframe connectors, it ought to be strong aplenty, and I get a rear driveshaft safety loop to augment the NHRA-mandated front one. Dale
It is starting to come to end, at least on my part. I just have a couple little tidbits to finish, like the trans mount. The last days were spent trying figure out how to make the stock gas tank work in a somewhat stock location, and still try and avoid the narrowed rear end and the springs being moved inboard. Also, and I say this with much conviction, but the new Mopar springs that are currently available all ****! I do not know what type of steel they use, but we ended up getting a very expensive set of Tri-Cities Springs, and they totally did the trick. Firm, and no sag. The rear bulkhead is in, as per NHRA spec, way overkill with 19-guage, but at least ?I know it won't fail. I'm going to miss this car, its one of the more *****in rides to come out of the 'Farm's roll-up door.. Dale
If you live in SoCal,then i'm sure you know of Augie's Nova! Here it is at the Mooneyes BBQ last year and afterwards on the frwy,on the drive home...
Oh yea, me and Augie know each other! *****in car, over the top!! Here's one night we all got together back for that g***er round-up at Robins a couple years ago. Hopped on the freeway with Augie, and damn near shut it down screwing around with g***ers and hotrods!
I knew him from Whittier Blvd,in the Austin Healey, way back in the late 70's. Talked to him briefly at the Fathers Day show last year. Really nice guy! Where do you live in SoCal? I'd like to see your car when you get it rollin!
The owner of the Nova lives in Huntington Beach. I'm just helping him see his dream through. However, my altered wheelbase Dart prowls the the streets of SoCal:
Thought you might like to see this old skool Mopar that was racing at our local airport this past summer rt
Man, that's some nice work on that Nova. Can't wait to see the finished product. I seriously want to build an AWB car sometime soon. I'll probably go with a Mopar, just for nostalgia's sake. My old man was a Chrysler freak. That Dart is just my style!
Great job so far! Reminds me of Larry Seay's "Hustlin' Hillbilly" AWB Nova that used to run in KY in the 60s.
Goober- *****in pic of the Hillbilly car!!! Thats a first for me. I"ve had alot of AWB pics sent my way, but this is the first shot I've seen of this! Anyone recall the color of this car???
Hey Guys - owner of Storm Warning here! My wife and I cannot compliment Dale enough for the work he did to our AWB Nova at the Funny Car Farm. This man is a "Fab-Extraordinarier"! My wife and I are about seven months into this AWB Nova project and its really starting to come together! Its coming home tomorrow from the Funny Car Farm, back to Huntington Beach. Now all we need to do is fab and install the brake system, fuel lines, electrical, cooling, interior, engine, and induction! See you later, alligator! We hope to have it running (sans paint and interior) for the 2009 Cruisin' for a Cure" at the Orange County Fairgrounds in September. We'll see, cause "you don't know what you don't know." Still tons to do. Here is a link to Storm Warning's website if you're interested. We're trying to do***ent the entire project from start to finish. www.alteredwheelbasenova.com Enjoy! Wheels Up!
