What rear 4 link set up seems to be the best in a 32 frame with a 9" rear and Stock '40 spring...not coil over? Looking for ride comfort, safety, generally the nicest all around system...
Check out Riley Auto (vaphead) here on the HAMB. He has a cool little set up for the 4 bar and ladders.
If you like the P&J style why not make some long 4-bars and mount them similar. Maybe 6"-10" vertical separation in the back and fairly close together at the front. Granted, not the instant center bit the drag racers like, but it should work well and IMO better than a rear radius rod. Something like the 4-bars on the front of this car. Home-Made 4-bars are easy to make. Polyurethane bushings are the way to go.
not only that but hes an alliance member and a good guy to deal with, just bought a set of 32 rails from him.
I used the Pete and Jakes ladder bars on my 32 pickup,,,very traditional and a good look. I got a lotta parts from Eric,,can't say enough about his service. HRP
I'm leaning toward fabricating an equal length, parallel, 4-bar set up, but not too sure about how far apart the bars need to be, what diameter to use, or how long is ideal. If I'm going to make them from scratch, I wondering if Heim joints would be strong enough. Fabricating a 4-bar set up doesn't LOOK like Rocket Science, but just leary that there's something I should know so as to avoid "catastrophic" failure. Fabing it up just looks too easy...
i built my own set as well for my duramax. i did them 1.5" 1/4" wall and about 36" long. the longer the bars the less pinion change you will have throughout your suspension travel, providing you're making it adjustable. i think an ideal size for street rods is 1" or 1.25" and 3/16 or 1/4" wall. as far as the space between them try and get them either just outside of the axle or just inside and also make your panhard bar as long as possible to minimize side to side travel. some pics of mine http://s64.photobucket.com/albums/h197/1LOWDIESEL/truck/?start=180
Pete and Jake's rear ladder bars are without a doubt the simplest and easiest route to take. Talk to Vaphead cause he's the best.
While I used a long 4 bars and buggy spring on the 3 window, all my other deuces have P&J ladder bars. Looks more like a hotrod!
Jake has tweaked the ladder bar design a bit and is selling them through the Walden Speed Shop. Last item on page: http://www.waldenspeedshop.com/jitney.html
No, not even if you're road racing. Pete and Jake's rear ladder bars provide a triangulated rear suspention and are good to 500 HP plus. A no brainer for anyone whose building a not so traditional '40s or '50s style car and wants dependability and function above all else. I fab different rearend mounts which move them up out of site. Also, I'm a big fan of the guys who go out of their way to build everything with traditional early Ford parts like '36 rear bones. Reinforced they can be very functional while looking the best with just a little more work and cheaper.
I understand a transverse spring suspension does not need a panhard bar but does that answer change if it is a high arch spring?
