got hte headers for the 56 chevy gasser i'm building..pass side fits awsome..driver side set on gear box..
any one have any ideas besides beating the headers in about 1" to clear?will a 605 gear box fit better? thans tim

  2. you don't mention which engine you are useing or which headers.

i used hooker fenderwell headers in the 70's on my 55 with a sbc, and the fit was perfect. not sure how the bbc ones fit though but i presume they did as well.

as far as will it fit better with a 605 box, no. the 605 box makes it even tighter in there.

also don't know if you are using the original rear side mounted bellhousing, if not and are using engine side mounts and a rear crossmemeber consider shifting the engine over to the passenger side an inch or two, was commonly done by gm on some of the bbc powered cars back in the day, is done today as well by some without any problems

failing all that have the tube cut out by someone that is proficient with a tig and reroute the tube, not that big of a job for someone handy with a tig.

    good luck

Fenderwell headers? The ones on my '57 wagon run UP from the exhaust port, angle back toward the firewall, then bundle the four tubes and go straight down, back behind the front tire (through the inner wheel well, if I still had them on the car). Fenderwell headers are visible behind the tire from outside the car--tucked up in the fender well. I'm more concerned with hitting the tire than I am with hitting the steering box.

For normal headers that tuck between the engine block and frame, I'd check with Classic Chevy International or other header manufacturers--there's nothing new with Tri-5 Chevys, and today people aren't willing to put up with stuff that doesn't fit like they were back in the '60s and '70s. Someone makes a decent fitting header today that will chear a 605 box. Shorty, block-hugger, maybe even full length. Check around. Get one that fits out of the box, and you'll be much happier in the long run.

your right wasn't thinking when posted..lol

    it has a 454 , 400 auto trans..using the 3/4 forward side mount kit..the headers are from speeway..patriots headers..

605 tigher,,don't want that..moving eng over? won't that put my driveline off?

had normal headers on it.didn't like the look..gonna run a one piece tilt front end..

tire clearance won't be any problem..running a straight axle..front end raised up gasser style..

as long as you keep the centerline of the engine/trans parallel to the differential you will be in good shape. same thing as driveline angle but to the side instead of up and down.

  7. depending how close the passenger side header is to the inner fender, moving the engine over an inch of so is a good fix.

if not do the sectioning of the tube.

all tri five chevies have some sort of issue or other with header fit or rather unfit.

you would think that after 50 years all manufactures would have these applications worked out but sadly most don't and some don't even come close. the use of a big block just aggravates the situation.

don't give up though you have a much better chance of an easy fix as compared to mine.

with a bbc (that is a big block caddy) the fit is even more of a challenge, i just wished i would have gone the shift to the right trick myself, would have saved a lot of grief.

just curious what color is the 56 going to be???

after thinking about it last night..i beleive i might have it figured out..the motor is still setting on the front mounts we made to clear the old headers..possible needs to move over a little..i'm gonna put the side mount kit on tommarow night hopefully..

the colors...time being just gonna be primared black..
eventually when i ket the car done its gonna be two toned blue /silver..

brutus...your car looks good..that caddy motor should fill up the eng area nice..
