alternator on 54 olds anybody done it

got a 54 olds 98 2dr hrdtp need generator and wandering how to install a alternator. Any help would be great .

 

snag the brackets off a '63 or '64 394, might as well grab the alternator and regulator while you're at it.

haven't done it myself but I would bet they'de fit.

That's the first thing I did on my 55 (same engine). All you need to do is bend or weld up a bracket that fits the alternator's mounting flange, it will look exactly like the generator's, just shorter. Then drill 2 holes in it to mount to the exhaust manifold, so it lines up with the existing pulleys. You can even use the gen.'s adjusting bracket, as is.

 

you dont need to change any on the brackets on the engine.play with it for awhile,and it will all work out.

hey thanks for the info i found a nos heavyduty gen at a shop so its back to original .Any sites where they have old car pics and some olds stuff too

Nothin wrong with gennys and they look right on vintage tin. They are just expensive to run out and buy. If you are going to start running one, you need to be on the scrounge for any you can find and keep a spare built.
Plus they will only make maybe 25-30 amps at best so forget the high drain accessorys unless you have an 8D in the trunk.
