I would be happy with cars from most any of these lists but, I think my group of 5 are: '32 Ford roadster '34 Ford roadster '40 Lincoln Continental '53 Studebaker 2dr h/t '61 Lincoln convertible Not easy to hold it to just 5 American Designs. Al
not one mention of the ford mustang... c'mon Ryan... be honest... quit worrying about your image. "not one continuous line on that entire car" -Ryan (on mustangs)
When it comes to American cars I would say 51 Mercury coupe 49 Mercury coupe 32 Ford Roadster 36 Ford 3w coupe 40 Ford coupe
#1 1937 Lincoln Zephyr coupe (3w) #2 1936 Ford coupe (3w & 5w) #3 1940/41 Plymouth coupe (5w) #4 1938 Studebaker Commander coupe (5w with the pod lights) #5 1947 Chevrolet Suburban (with sunroof) the suburban...as there has to be one in there with more than 2 seats ...and yes, I love fat fenders coupes! ...and yes, biased on #3 Honorable mention and serious contender for #6 1938 Ford coupe (Gregorie's 2nd most beautiful car, the Zephyr is 1st) 1953 Corvette 1941 Desoto coupe (3w) if I could include one foreign car... 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder (#3) if I could include concept cars. 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt (#2)
As much as I like the AD series Chevy trucks, the Studebakers from the same era trump it. Smoother, rounder, more stylish in my opinion. So, my brief list: in no order... '50s Studebaker pickup '30s Cord. You know, the ones with the hidden headlights. I don't even know if I like them, but the style is timeless and forward-reaching. I gotta admire that. 1950 Plymouth fastback. I had one, great style and flowing lines. I miss that car. 1982 Vector W2. That was my dream car back in 1983 when I graduated high school. The Curved Dash Olds. Beautiful and basic, like a fine wristwatch. Richard Petty's Superbird. Beautiful shape, perfect color. Awesome history. I'm sure there's more.
The 63-65 Rivieras remain unchallenged on the list..The 53 Studebaker is always high on everybodys list..My favorite is the 33-34 Fords..The 55-57 Chevrolet Nomad stationwagon..The Lincoln MKII is the nuts..and for us Studebaker geeks, the Avanti..Lincoln Zephyrs are but a dream, and I certainly wouldn't turn away a 61-62 Corvette for dripping in my garage...

Top 5 today... I'm really liking the 1936 Lincoln Zephyr right now.. <img src=http://www.autolife.umd.umich.edu/Design/Gartman/D_Casestudy/P833_66381_LincolnZephyr_19.gif> 1934 Ford Coupe <img src=http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee254/designisgraphic/IMG_9310re.jpg> I'm a Lincoln guy but I think the 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is a great design... <img src=http://image.lowridermagazine.com/f/8338843/0608_lrmp_01_z+96_cadillac_fleetwood+front_passenger_view.jpg> (not this color, or wheel choice.. but you get the idea) 1937 Chevy Master Deluxe <img src=http://image.lowridermagazine.com/f/8349054/0207_01zoom+1937_chevrolet_master_deluxe+front_right_view.jpg> (again not my favorite color or wheel set-up) A little biased, but right now I'm really liking my boat of a car... 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V.. Here's my car.. <img src=http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee254/designisgraphic/lincs01.jpg> Runner's up are: 1942 Chevrolet Fleetline 1956 Lincoln Continental (I have to agree with Gary Howard.. these cars are beautiful. I've told my brother that the 56 Lincoln is probably one of the only cars I would trade my Lincoln for) -Juan
For me it would have to be (in no particular order I wiould kill for any of them) 63-65 Riviera Plymouth Superbird 61-63 T-Bird 36 Ford Chrysler Airflow (probably my absolute favorite, so far ahead of its time)
My taste picks,Cord 812,then '53 Studebaker 2dr h/t,and the bullet nose older Stud too,53 Vett,86 GT Fiero. But still like any hot rod that's done well and shiny.
A list like this cannot be complete without the ground-breaking design of the early Corvette....as American as it gets! (This one is a '57) (If British were allowed, it would be the XK-120 and the XKE)
I agree on the '38s (I loves me a '38 Tudor), Rivis and '36s, but personally I have never liked '32s. I like '28-'29s way better. '60 Starliners are up there. I know I am bias, but they were a pretty amazing work of art from the factory.
b/c as anyone who has one can attest, the headlight doors are usually the first thing to quit working electrically speaking. The electrical motor is a one- year only, one-car only design that looks great, but has an achilles heel, in that the electric motor is located right behind dead center on the bumper so its susceptible to be damaged in a front end collision and moisture is its mortal enemy. If you have a working set, don't mess with them.
I'll take the shit with you on the second gen corvair. A truly beautiful body style that Nader ran right off the cliff. Kudo on refrencing the Charger too, but I'm partial to the 68 for the "coke-bottle" tail lights. Well done, bro.
I agree on the 65 Corvair too. 63-65 Riv... most definitely belongs on the list. I have one to add that has not been mentioned: 62 & 63 Chevy Impala. Damn near perfect lines on both. Actually, I would include 61's and '65s too.
1933 Ford 3 Window, 1936 Ford 3 Window, Duesenberg, 61 Lincoln, 63 Corvette That's today's list only. Tomorrow I'll have others. It's really tough to keep it down to 5 cars. I'll bet I could list 100 or more lust machines.
Well, to be fair, Nader wrote "Unsafe At Any Speed" before the design of the second-gen Corvair became public. Don't get me wrong, I love Corvairs, even the early ones, but there were some definite engineering mishaps that GM should have addressed earlier, and they ended up trying to patch up a bit after the book came out, but I just don't think the Corvair had a chance. It was too odd of a design, and the Chevy II was just a more conventional layout that the American public at the time was more comfortable with. If the Chevy II didn't exist, GM would have probably worked more with the Corvair design, but it seems like they just chose one over the other. It was easier to move forward with the Nova instead of retool the Corvair, especially since it was unable to pass the government crash standards.
These Automobile Designs look good, but just look so much better Slammed 70 Challenger Slammed with 18/20's 49 Ford Slammed 59 Chevy Bel Air 4-door Slammed(the 4-door just looks rite) 64 Galaxie Slammed 56 OLDS ....... Guess!!
I have thought about this in the past aswell! Heres my list! 1956 Chevrolet 2-10 2 door sedan 1970 Pontiac GTO 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline 1963 Corvette Stingray 33 Ford Coupe
My personal favourite's. 1932 Ford Roadster 1933 Ford 3 Window Coupe 1956 Chevrolet 210 Hardtop 1957 Chrysler 300 D 1957 DeSoto Adventurer 1960 Ford Starliner Yea 6, I know. HemiDeuce.
1. 1953 Cadillac Eldorado 2. 1936 Ford Coupe 3. 1956 Lincoln Mark II 4. 1960 Ford Starliner 5. 1960 Cadillac Eldorado
Here's my five--and the stable I'm working towards in no particular order 63 falcons sprint hartop or conv 57 vette 35 ford convertible sedan 53-53 cadillac (hardtop or conv)--although I'm partial to the 52 27 ford roadster there is indeed a shoe for every foot and an ass for every seat.
I'll bite.. No particular order either. 32 Ford 5 window coupe. 40 Ford coupe, standard or deluxe. 55 Corvette (any solid axle Vette will do, but i like the 55's because of the 265) 33 Ford 5 window coupe ( like the grill alot more the 34's, and am just partial to 5 windows) 58 Chevy Impala 2 door hard top.. There's actually many more i could add, and in my opinion are worthy of a "top" choice, but these are what came to mind for me right away. Now, non American......... 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder I know, that wasn't asked.. I just can't explain it, i love the little bastards! haha
