What states require fenders of some kind on old hotrods--or vehicles in general?

California does have a fender law. A lot of states do depending on vehicle weight. It's real low like 1400 lbs or less. However, most cops don't h***el rodders. Those gangster cars on the other hand were always getting stopped because the tires stuck out beyond the fender lines.

Here in Illinois, if the car is operated with respect to other traffic, we seem to be left alone. My car is quiet, I hope they never look up to see what is going past.

Ct. has fender law for front and rear of rods but I see plenty running around not being bothered.I know they must be in place for inspection .

  10. Like Leon said we have the fender law here in CT. As long as you don't act like a **** 99.99% of cops wont h***le you. We also have a no side pipe law and a no airbag law (unless factory installed) Todd

I think a lot of Police of respect for older cars, and as long as you're not driving stupid they'll leave you alone. In PA you have to have fenders, but I only see lifted trucks and imports with tires sticking out pulled over. Cops we'll just look the other way when a nice piece of historic American metal rolls by in most cases.

Washington has a fair weather fender law for pre-world war two cars ( used to call it pre-war but now have to clarify, wish I didn't). You just aren't supposed to drive in the rain. But, I've never seen anyone who's not a total ****wad stopped for it.

PA got rid of the fender requirements, along with the requirement to have a bumper and a hood in 2005 (Act 228). New law did require that the vehicle had to have protection from the fan blades, like a shroud. But the change apparently only applies to registered streetrods, not those not yet registered. Which is ********.

I don't know how it is now but when I got my T-bucket licensed in 2005 it was very easy. Took the car to an inspection station. 1/2 hour or less inspection. Inspector signed the paperwork. 5 1/2 weeks later ***le and plates. Easy. The untold secret... DO NOT go to a notary. Go through your local State Representative. And have very organized receipts.

    Sorry for the hijack!!

  20. I think in California, it's legal or they don't h***le you as long as it's not raining and you're not driving like an idiot. If you're driving in the rain with no fenders, you shoot up a big fantail of water and mud all over everybody behind you, so then they'd probably pull you over.

  21. M***. does not have a fender law. Any vehicle 1948 or older or registered as 1948 or older isn't required to have fenders.

  24. In Minnesota you're supposed to have fenders... but there are many people that don't have them on their hotrods, and never get pulled over for it.

    Minnesota Statute
    169.734 AUTOMOBILE FENDERS.
Every p***enger automobile shall have fenders, or other devices, that are designed to
prevent, as far as practicable, water, dirt, or other material being thrown up and to the rear by
    the wheels of the vehicle.

Calif does have a fender law if you are over 1500 lbs you are required to have fenders but there are ways to get around it and get a weight slip. You hide 500 lbs in your trunk hook up the trailer get it weighed then take it out put car on trailer and re weigh it and you get a weight slip that is under 1500lbs. I did this in 1970 for my bucket got stopped numerous times for no fenders showed slip and the po po just walked shaking there head

    Oregon is too.

  30. yep, it's pain in the ***...
I got a street rod tag for my 39 Panel. I had to put bumpers on it to p*** the PA saftey inspection. without the bumpers I failed the inspection, period. went to every rod insection in Northest PA. all with the same response, no bumper = fail)

the paperwork was sent in to Harrisburg Feb 18th 2008. Harrisburg finally looked at the paperwork on June 6th 2008 . they rejected it for lack of insurance because my card expired on May 31st. The paperwork than sat until July 8th when I called Harrisburg. asked them what was taking so long. they verified my insurance had never lapsed. only the card was out of date because of the obsurd amount of time p***ed before they looked at the paperwork. Tag and paperwork back to me on July 22 2008...
