Use a healthy mixture of baking soda and warm water it will help cut the smell. Then use a GOOD shampoo like AVEDA. its expensive but it works. I have had this happen morte than once with my hound!

  8. doggo sprayed by skunk + electric razor + tomato juice + baking soda + high voltage electric current + bathtub = no more worrying about bad smelling skunk dog [IMG]
Seriously some tomato juice and some baking soda outta do it. Then i like the idea of a nice shampoo for a good "smell me good coverup"

A friend of mine owns a dog grooming shop and she has some stuff made especially for that...ummm...occasion!!! But, I doubt you wanna drag the hounds down to Livonia for a de-tox treatment! (But I can aske her what the stuff is and where to get it tomorrow if you'd like!!)

In the meantime, it's tomato juice or a doghouse moved FAR from YOUR dwelling!!

  15. Believe it or not the best thing to use is a mixture of white vinegar and water or(and I'm REALLY NOT making this up)M***engil feminine hygiene products(liquid).
I had a German Shepherd that got sprayed one night and not having any tomato juice(it really isn't too good anyway)ran down to a local convenience store to get some. They were out of it so I got a bunch of small cans of tomato paste figuring it was the same thing.
My dog didn't like getting wet to begin with and a friend of mine and I finally managed to get him into the bathtub and lather him down with the paste. After about 6 cans of the stuff he decided he had enough and proceeded to do a long drawn out shake.Boy if that bathtub didn't look like a scene out of,"Psycho" I don't know what would.Wound up putting him down in the cellar for a couple weeks.Couldn't get him near a bathroom again.
Another time my Doberman tried to bite a skunk in the ***(at least I think she did because she got it right down the throat)and damn near choked to death!I think she thought it was a cat as she had done that before to cats and only got her nose torn to shreds.Stupid dog!
    Anyway try the vinegar;it works.

Yanno mike THAT sounds like a good plan. I just gave them both a bath...apparently 1 didnt learn from the others mistake....in the peroxide, baking soda and dish soap mixture. Seems semi ok. It just smells SO BAD OUTSIDE right now, I can't tell if its any better or not - and I'm not gonna let them IN to find out. LOL
So if they still stink something fierce tomorrow...Ill do the gojo thing - i don't think theres ANY getting the one dog back in the water again.
    thanks for the help guys!

and ray..ive heard the m***engil thing too....i bet the dog would LOVE that. LOL

again, thanks for all your help guys....
both dogs took off once I let them outside...hopefully they didn't run away because Im so MEAN for giving them a bath. Its smelling better outside, and i've got every candle in the house burning. Wish us luck upon their return! [IMG]

oh, and if this post gets booted - id completely understand...you were just the first people I knew of to turn to, that might have some unknown kick*** remedy!

Just make sure you're not using the pumice gojo as that will rip up and sting like mad on skin that's not tough. I once used it to get marker off my back (don't ask) and my back was red for the next two days. [IMG]

    Good luck.

    M***engil....ha!

here's what works: Simple Green and Febreeze. SG cuts the stinky, horrible filth, and Febreeze [corn-based, nontoxic] knocks out the stank.

get this: brother's German Sheperd chases a skunk inside the bro's house, skunk jet-bombs the whole friggin' domicile. then it wouldn't leave! we went in after it with a spray bottle filled with tomato juice, until I pointed out that contrary to our ***umptions and actions, tomato juice is not, in fact, a skunk's natural enemy. we found out skunks have two scents: bad, and teargas. we called this backup stank "The Afterburner". it made strong men flee like scared Brownies. aaaAAAkk!

Safariknut beat me to it! It worked on our dog when she got sprayed. The hardest part was buying the case of m***engil; I sure got some funny looks!

  25. We've been having a problem here with unleashed dogs turning up dead. I may have solved it.

  26. For this topic being so far off topic it looks like a lot of people have run across this before! The peroxide works pretty good...at least that's what the neighbors on both sides tell me. Wait til the first time the dog gets wet! A little of the stink will surface! My dogs haven't been hit (Yet) but both neigbors dogs have gotten it bad.

We trap them polecats in live traps, throw a blanket over the trap and then throw the trap in the lake, wait 15 minutes, retreive the trap an toss the dead skunk.

Sounds mean as hell but if you use a leg trap they can lift their tail and make a big sink. The live trap doesn't give them enough room to lift their tail. The blanket is to protect me, if they see where my hand is they'll bite! The drowning is a quick and painless death, a release would just let me be a target.

Vineger and water DOUSCHE! Works the best! Unfortunatly I think this experience is just part of being a dog owner. Don't even bother with the tomato juice, it "kinda works", but not half as well as the dousche.

It sounds like you have already bathed them, now get a bottle of vanilla extract and mix it with water in a spray bottle. Spray em down and brush em. Does wonders.

Mine get sprayed about once a year. I have tried the tomato juice thing, but I dont think it works too great. The orange gojo is by far the best thing I have ever tried. It works great and leaves 'em smelling good. I'll have to try the Febreeze trick next time though.

Tomato/V8 absolutely does not work. Very minor change in smell, and impossible to stop dog from shaking it off all over your wall and ceiling too. The peroxide base mix (I haven't needed it myself, thank heavens) is praised by all the country dog owners I know:
    http://dogs.about.com/library/various/blskunk.htm
And--it's worth going to the hardware and spending whatever it takes to buy a washtub or storage bin you can use outside. Just walking the dog through the house to the bathtub is something you will regret for six weeks. Do the job in a bathing suit, then slather yourself with the peroxide mix or you will soon find out how few friends you really have.
