Just wondering if anybody knows of an adapter to mate a automatic trans(i.e. 700r4 , th 350, th 400 etc...) to a chevy inline six (250 c.i.)?? I 'm about to purchase the motor+muncie real cheap!! I'd like to run the auto but i'm tryin to keep the cost down as i'm not keepin this ride!! I used a company called Wilcap a bunch of years ago on a real weird combo i had, they were real good to deal with, any help would be great!!
I seen a 67 GMC 1 ton dually this last summer with a 292 and a 700R4, the owner said it worked great with the 4.11 rear axle ratio and he could drive it on the highway at 70 m.p.h. with no problems at all. Jon
One note of caution. Some of the 700r4's out there do not have the same pattern as the V-8s. You need a 700r4 from a 4.3 V-6 or V-8, not one from a a 2.8 V-6 or similar.
NO adapter needed, as long as you start with the correct patterned transmission. The 194-215-230-250-292 sixes have the same bellhousing mount as the Chevrolet V-8's. Why not use a 200R4? They are a bit lighter, and can be built pretty stout, and they are the same lenth as the stock auto trans/stick shift setup the early Novas/Chevy II's came with. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Steve, you are correct on the 60 degree engines having the other case. The 200R4 has better gearing than the 700R4. (it is also the only OD trans available for the BOPC pattern if you get it out of a Buick G-body)
All 200-4R's are dual pattern. Read this carefully... http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/tra...html?highlight=power+loss+auto+transmissions:
I put one in a guy's 66 c-10 that was a 250 with the 3.73 rear. I really liked that truck. It was geared just a tad bit too high for a highway with big hills...unless you saw the hill coming and planned for it. Around the town & secondary roads it was perfect. You need to fab a stout bracket to hold the TV cable to the bell housing bolts....and make sure it's adjusted correctly.
I had that combo in my 36 with a 4.10 gear, worked fine. You will have to fab your linkage. Bow tie Overdrive has a how-to. PM me if I can help.
i think the 200r4's are harder to come by. you may juts need different torque converter bolts for the 700 or 200 trans
What the fuck is it with the people on here these days. I can see taking the time to typing a post to add some info to a thread but to just repeat what has been posted just to get your thread count up is fucking gay.
re 700r4: same bolt pattern as a sbc or bbc of most years so it just bolts right up plus you can run low rear gear (4:11) and in 4th it works out to around 2:73. what are you doing to your 250? make sure your flywheel is for internal balance motor. with 2-3 1 barrels, 280-290 dur. 450-470 lift cam and some headers these motors scream. if not fast enough swap in a 292. not an expert so keep researching here...good luck
Just remember that there is a big safety difference between an O/D transmission and a short axle (700R4 + 4.11) and a wide-ratio 4 speed and a tall axle (Chrysler 3.09 + 3.23) at the same engine RPM and MPH: driveshaft speed.
I'm a little slow form Australia, is the 230 same as a 1954 235 inline 6 or is the bellhousing pattern different. i would love to put a auto in mine. cheers
The sixes didn't get the V8 bellhousing pattern until '63. also the '62 Nova. What is needed to put a modern automatic behind a 235 has been covered many times...
What about the 235?!? What (besides an anchor chain) will hook to it easily? I would like to have a four speed auto. The PG is fun once it gets spun up but a dog in traffic. Thanks guys.
Seen a Chevy truck @ Goodgoys that had a six with a 700R4, asked him and he give me this website. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/howto/trans.htm They make an adaptor to hook the trans up.
