Saw American Graffitti at the Star Lite drive-in in North Reading Mass when it first came out in the 70's.Had a friend that was into rock climbing at the time. One night he climbed up the back side of the screen and repelled down the front side during the movie.Kinda funny.
"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" My Brother made me sit outside at the nose of his 55' - 210 While him and his girfriend were in the back seat.
Years later "Animal House" we borrowed my Dads 65 Ford 1 1/2 ton horse truck. 25 of us with lawn chairs, a beer ball, and a bunch of bottle rockets on the 4th of July. Parked way in back and dropped the ramp, what a blast.
Vanishing Point - Watched it first of many times at the Skyview in Salinas setting in my Cuda. Didn´t want to relive the plot, though.
...and ole yelller, hush hush sweet charlette, all the Bond flicks....AG, vanishing point.... we went to see all the new movies at the drive in.....most of the house theathers ran them latter then the drive in did as far as when it was released...
The one and only Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I spit on your grave, and a bunch of other B classic horror flicks.
Funny but for some reason, I was 5, my brother 2 and sis 15, parents to see Easy Rider at the drive in when it came out... one of my earliest memories of the drive in... All nite Halloween (not the movie) marathons are cool at the drive in...
My Cousin and his Dad and Mom in their 1966 Toronado took me to see "Bonnie and Clyde". We were 7 and his Dad tried to get us to go to the concession stand a couple of times to no avail. That was the first time I heard his Dad call her "DD". Think Annette Funicello and you got it.
One of the last drive-in movies I went to in High School was in my 56 Chevy. I had been trying to get this girl to go out with me for a longtime. The movie was "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, with a lot of big name actors, like Buddy Hacket, Johnathon Winters, Terry Thomas, Phil Silvers, Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, and Spencer Tracey. Anyway I went with the idea of "making out" but the movie was so funny all we did was laugh through the entire movie.
I got to see this movie at the drive in here in bako back in the mid 90's before they turned it into a Messican swap-meet, now the auto mall sits where the old drive in was. Maybe off-topic to some but there is some cool culture shit in the movie.-Weeks
American Graffiti, Vanishing Point, and Two Lane Black Top all the same night - the whole place was full of hot rods, muscle cars, and customs. You couldn't walk to the concession stand without tripping over beer cans and bottles - great night!!
Great memories of drive-ins in the 50's. Sweet young ladies, steamy windows..Now I take my dog..doesn't eat as much, but farts a lot more!! One drive-in had a bunch of stray cats wandering around..spent all night bitching about the "fishy smell" ..maybe that's why it's just the dog and I now??
we are fortunte to have one around the corner still going strong, there must be only about 3 or 4 left in australia, its pretty sad but with land prices going up so much in the cities a drive in is a pretty attractive site to developers, all the fun places are getting wiped out and big buisness blocks go up. so i used to go every week on tuesday, tuesday nights were discounted, it was known as tight arse tuesday and each night you see two movies, that was about 15 years ago when we were teens, who ever had no money that night had to ride in the boot and sometimes it took a hour to get in if it was a new movie. car movies were always popular and brought out the nicer cars, i remember a aussie movie "metal skin", the place was packed and the movie turned out crap, we lined up for about a hour with two people in the boot of a 810 datsun. when i took chicks i would usually hope for a boring movie or rain.
You are oh so right that movie has got to be one of the funniest of all time, I even have it on a DVD. I remember going with my brother-in-law to see "Gone in 60 Seconds" when it came out in 1974 at the HWY 39 Drive-In in Garden Grove, California.
A long long time ago in Detroit we went to the drive-in movie and saw 3 movies Carniverous,Raw Meat, and Here comes the Rats. Not saying it was my fav.but the chicks were hanging on that nite.
When I was about 12, my folks wanted to load up the truck and go to the drive-in. We saw "Vanishing Point" and "Two-Lane Blacktop". IIRC, we were in my Dad's '69 Chevy C-10 pickup, and he backed into the parking spot, dropped the tailgate and broke out the cooler, the lawn chairs and the blankets. Back in the day when you could ride in the back of a pickup, without everybody and their dog wanting to bitch you out for it!
There's a drive-in movie within an hour of where I live. Opened up in the early 50's and is still pretty much as it opened up. They show first run movies most of the time, but run movies like Christine too and invite the rodders in for special roped off parking.
well from my memories in the late 70's as a kid going in my parent's "Vista Cruiser" station wagon with three paper grocery bags full of popcorn and all the neighborhood kids on the roof with blankets and pillows.....awesome memories....let's see..... i would say E.T., then Return of the Jedi, and Gremlins, and there's more but those i really remember
I only remember going to the drive in once as a kid. We saw a double feature, "Grease" and "For your eyes only".
I know the guy who owns the drive in in Dodge City KS, and I've been thinking about a trying to get him to have a "hot rod" night. I can't remember the last show I went to at a drive in, we had one in town when I was a kid, and I know that we went sometimes, but I was probably around 5 or 6 when it closed up. I do remember dad popping up a grocery bag full of popcorn though......
Cheech and Chongs "Up In Smoke", me and my girlfriend must have went to it 30 times, probably only saw 20 minutes of the movie!
There are two still open in the Oklahoma City area - one is on the south side, and the other is in Guthrie. Any of you Colorado guys on the Western Slope remember the Tru-Vu and the Big Sky drive-ins in Delta? I know the Tru-Vu is still open, and the Big Sky closed several years back. At the Big Sky, I saw the original "Carrie" the night before my school's prom (saw it with my prom date!) in my Dad's '63 T-Bird. That car was a real PITA to get romantic in!
My earliest was with my parents watching " Bikini Beach " & " Beach Blanket Bingo " in East Beaverwick , NJ ! That was in 1963-1964 ? Had cool parents ! The best ones was "American Graffitti " & "Two Lane Blacktop " at the Richie Drive-in , in Glen Burnie , MD . We all had our hot rods and muscle cars there , so when the movies were over we burned the tires off our cars when we left racing on Richie Highway ! Then there was the "Valley Drive-in" on Reistertown Road in MD. that showed nothing but XXX skin flicks there ! There was also another great drive-in called "The Route 40 drive-in " on RT40 in Catonsville , Md . Saw a ton of Horror flicks there ! Lots of Gear Heads always showed up there too . That was the Good Ole Days !
