1933 Steel Vicky Build

This is a shop project that I've been planing on doing for a while now. As a shop I will in the near future be offering the 1933 Steel Vicky conversion. Both in complete bodies that I will convert, like this one. And in converting customers 2 door sedans into 1933 vicky's. All the origional beads and contours will be faithfully reproduced down to the smallest deatails.

Once I get a few of these done myself I will be able to accuratly judge how much a conversion will cost. So costs for the conversion will be down the road.

This sedan will be my first vicky conversion. It is an actual 1933 2 door sedan that is amazingly in great shape. It is a complete car with suspention, engine/transmission, and all the sheet metal.

My plans with this build is first to convert the sedan into a vicky. And then to do all the metal work. The body, and rest of the sheet metal will be completly metal finished. (The entire car will look like the dash, sanded to perfection). Once that is finished I will be selling the car complete with everything included.

Very interesting, but make sure you pay attention to the roofline and window opening profile. VERY important, and that's where most pseudo-Vickys fail. Seeing your past projects, I know you have the metalworking expertise.

I plan on making dies to reproduce the rear beads around the rear of the car, and also a set of dies to reproduce the small bead that continues from the rain gutter.

Today I continued working on all the panels that really dont need much work. Just getting them looking good.

Also started working on the rear fender. Its really in good shape, just needs some bead work, dents, and a patch on the front of the fender.

 

That looks like a real solid body you started with.

 

I'm going to have to stay tuned for this one

 

This will be interesting to watch. Posted on here before, I did the same to a 32 Tudor, didn't have as much to start with as you do. Keep us posted with updates for sure.

Just curious. What all is involved in the conversion? Is it just from the doors back? Or do the doors have to be modified too?

 

Its just the back of the car that needs to be altered. The rear side windows are smaller by roughly 9 inches. The beads, and back panel under the window are all different. The 1933 vicky has a small bead that starts at the end of the drip rail and continues around the back of the car to the other drip rail. The bottom end of the car where the gas tank cover mounts is in the same place but the bead there is different as well. And also the rear roof is leaned forward slightly more than the 2 door sedan is.

Looks like you started with a great car...definitely keep the pix and updates coming

 

I have access to one. (wish it was mine though). I will use it for all my patterns and basically make a fixture here at the shop using those patterns. That way I can use that fixture over and over again making each conversion as uniform as possible.

 

Over at metalmeet.com there are a few guys using bondo bucks. You make a frame out of rod and use body puddy to pick up the detail. Here is a picture of one Wray Schelin posted.

That's one reason why I asked if the vicky was yours. You could get some pattern bucks off of it, if it was body shell.

 

Ive been working on this rear fender for the past few days. I worked out all the dents, now I just have to patch the front where it meets the running board.

 

If its one thing I've learned from watching your builds....is.....that......

Tonight I got the front of this fender patched.

Now with this fender done I will use it to check the contours of the other. That way I can make sure they both reflect well.

 

i am definatly interested to see how it turns out, i have a 33 2dr sedan, and ive been debating vickys or sedan delivery, how you post some pics and good luck-

I finally got the body sandblasted. Now i can start on the body.

Today I finished up the rear fender and got it bolted on.

I also started hanging the drivers door. The hinges were bent so its taken some massaging to get the gaps looking good. Ive still got some more tweaking, but its coming.

Today I am starting on the other rear fender. This one is a lot worse than the other, but still its not that bad.

I will post more pictures later today.

 

I got all the dents worked out of the fender. Now I have to patch the front as well as fix some problems in the bead and wire edge.

 

How did you get all of the dents out? just hammer and dolly?

 

Do you use a shrinking disk too??
