I have an 8N and the motors seem similar, I guess I need to take a better look at it. The head seems like it is close to a head on a model A motor.

  2. I recently had my 8 N engine apart. The 8 N has a displacement of 120 cu in. On the early Ford tractors after the Fordson the oil pan is cast and is used as the frame. This practice was continued into the Jubilee period but the displacement was increased to 134 cu in and 172 cu in OHV. In the near future I'm planning on rebuilding a Jubilee 801 from the late 50's or early 60's. This is the 172 cu in engine. You must take the steering loose on the left side and unbolt and swing the front axle out of the way in order drop the pan. Not quite that simple but close. In the past there were some Ferguson tractor engines used in midgets. A friend has an all Aluminum Ferguson tractor. One of the companys that built the "A" "B" powered air craft also made flat head 6 and V8 tractors based on the Ford 2N 9N and 8N models. Google Funk tractors. More trivia than you need!

I have seen pics of the Funk conversions. I have found one person that sell a conversion kit to do it yourself. The kit was for a V8 using an 8BA

I got a question about todays fuels in A engine. What happens if unleaded is used all the time? Are these engines prone to burning valves or seats?

Last week I seen a '31 slant window 4dr sedan that had a fairly warmed over B engine. The car had a F150 trans that was connected to the torque tube. The setup looked right, from the inside of the car you couldn't tell a non-A trans was being used.

I've seached to see who offers a conversion kit to run this trans with no luck. Can one of you turn me in the right direction?

These F150 transmission instructions are from a very nice gentleman Al Berry. Al was kind enough to share his retro fit of Transmission to model A. See zip file

Hi Guys! Although I read this awesome thread from time to time, I have never had anything to add...until now. I bought my first Model A Banger this weekend. It's going to need more work than I anticipated, but it's a good start.

    1) *Edit* Never mind, I figured it out on my own. DUH! But I still have a question about the valves. The other valve sealing surfaces look good, but the sealing surface of the block...ehhh, their kind of pitted. Not too bad, but I'm curious if I should just try doing a hell of a lap job or have them cut? I have decided to pull the whole thing apart if for nothing else but to clean out all of the grit and crap that it has in it anyway.

    2) Which are the best informational books on these motors, both rebuild, maintenance and hop-up?

    3) I will obviously be needing some gaskets. Is there a preferred brand and is the kit complete?

This motor is going into a pre-War style lakes T. It will remain stock internally for now with just carbs and exhaust for hop-up parts. Thanks for any and all information.

There's Derek Thomason for one. He makes the Kiwi quick-change centre sections for Model A axles. Few of us Brits are running them.
    There's this guy also...

They're the two that I can think of.

    Hi Guys
I scored a volvo j type laycock overdrive from the local wrecking yard.
I am having trouble seperating it from the gearbox, I am trying not to destroy it. I have removed as much as I can from the gearbox, but no luck so far. Any help?
    Thanks Brendan

Thanks for the advice guys. Just so you all know, I am slowly reading through all of the past Banger "meets" in order to catch up.

Brendan, you will have to remove the overdrive unit from the intermediate housing first. Then you can remove the intermediate housing.

    Brendan,

Be careful when you take that transmission apart, my friend has one in his car. When we seperated the case to change the leaking gaskets a couple of the schncronizers came apart. As I recall they were a real bastard to put back together

The F150 trans are getting hard to find and are worth more for the truck than our A's. There is a big jump from 2nd to 3rd like a stock A. A couple of guys here in Nor-Cal were doing them for around $2000 with a shortened drive shaft and torque tube.

There is a lot of good info there but I didnt do everything the same way he did and my way is a lot less expensive.

I didnt see any pictures so I cant compare the parts I made to his, but I guarantee my parts are pretty..

Gear ratios are the same as Model A.
The transmissions are $65 at the U-pull-it

    Hi guys

    I am still here

    Happy New Year to all

  29. I was given the priveledge to tour a local 'private' wrecking yard. I came across this 'A' with a cover on the motor. I saw some fins on the side and was curious.

    Check it out!

This thing is sitting in a Model A truck, smack dab in the middle of the yard rusting away.

    Crazy.

Here are a few more photos of the 'junk' laying around.
