I'm headed to Florida for a few weeks, and would like to know of any good garages, museums, or BBQ places along the way; junkyards that might yield 30's Mopar parts; or if you could just use a few hours help with your current project (or just want to BS over a couple of beers, my treat).

    now you're talking.

I've always liked the original White Swan on HWY 301 in Smithfield, NC...convenient from I-95

Here's Bob Garner's book on BBQ in NC:

But since you'll probably be coming through Raleigh, I've heard good things about The Pit.

...I guess it all really matters which way you're coming.

Thank you. Dukes, Garlits and White Swan are on the list. I've made this trip before, but with help from the HAMB, this could be the best yet!

I can only clue you in to Eastern NC style BBQ right here in Raleigh....

Cooper's and Olde Time are my favorite... though there are a few others around that kick *** as well... and some good old southern homestyle at Watkin's...

I've heard about Eastern NC style BBQ --- something about ****ed vinegar, and leave the red sauce at home?

How far south in Florida are you coming? There are some great BBQ joints down here, and there is always a project that could use a helping hand for and hour or two.

  9. It must be an acquired taste, as it didn't do much for me the first time i had it........but then, I felt the same way about Scotch once upon a time, and now it is my primary source of water.

I'm guessing you are staying either on or close to I-95 all the way?

I'm going all the way, so to speak, to MM Zero, Key West, so I'm open to pretty much any route, and would be glad to break up the monotony with a BS session over a roadster project, or whatever.

  11. The powers that be here seem to be more worried about Old cars than drug dealers. What the salt air hasen't eaten the Damn Code enforcement people ***** about. And if they fine you for having an unregistered, uninsured project & you decide that you are not going to pay, they add the fine to your water &/OR tax bill & shut you off if you dont pay.
There is a 35 y/o woman that lives next door to me ,doesn't have a job yet always seems to have plenty of money and drives a Mercedes Benz.Has company about 6-7 times a day, each visitor stays a coupla minutes,I've never seen a cop h***le her,but I expect code enforcement any day now because of my project 55.
I live alone & would be honored if you stopped for a bull session.I have a queen size pull out couch and you could stay for a coupla days if you want to. I live about a mile from Daytona Beach.

    oldfart,
thanks, I just might take you up on that. Daytona is on my agenda, and I'll be going down during the Rolex 24 hours, and coming back at the time of the Bud Shootout.

Amen brother. Unlike Big Ed's, at Watkin's you have to order country ham if you want red-eye gravy on your grits. Boh!

For Eastern-style BBQ east of Raleigh and in addition to White Swan, there's also Stephenson's BBQ on HWY 50 in Willow Springs, Wilber's on HWY 70 in Goldsboro and Bunn's BBQ in downtown Windsor. Bunn's an interesting b/c it's in an old service station...photo op perhaps? The main thing to look for is to make sure the hog is cooked over coals and NOT GAS!

Like I said, it all depends which way you're coming through NC. Let us know and we'll hook a brother up!

Duke's is a good stop. If by chance they're closed or you're looking for something different, I can't say enough good things about "Old House" in Walterboro, SC. Its less than a mile from 95 and man it is fantastic. True down home cookin'!!!

Hopefully you can get some vinegar based NC style BBQ and some mustard based SC style BBQ before you get down to the red sauce in Florida :)

The "Old House" is on the left ... about 1 mile or so from I-95.
    Good food at decent prices.

If you have the time, I suggest you turn on I-26 towards the coast and go to Charleston for a day or so. Very historic downtown and great palces to eat. My wife really likes Hymans Seafood on Meeting St. and we LOVE to eat Bar-B-Que at Thomas Bessingers ... on Hwy 17S ... about two or three miles out of Charleston headed towards I-95.

  16. I read this blog full of crime reports and apparently hooking, drugs and child abuse are in and out crimes in Florida, but a guy falls on hard times can't maintain a nice green lawn, they throw him in jail without bail.

My buddy is down there to go to the old time race meet at Zephyrhills, I'm not sure when that starts up again, but lots of early coupes and open wheel cars and they race around a little track there. Might be worth a visit -

Junkyards. Try John's off the 101. In between Bunnel and Daytona.
You might fly by it if your not looking. Whne you aee a fire truck off the side if the road...start looking for the driveway.
I know there are atleast three late 50 mopars and two hemi's in there.
He has a stack of diff's that will make you say WTF!!!
I pulled 5 9's outta there and that was just scratching the surface.

BTW the rattle snakes in there are HUGH. Best time to go in the winter time. One so you can see the poison sumac and Ivy and two the snakes move slower.
Last snake I pulled out there was 7 ft long and big around as a soup can. I shot him between the eyes twice...that just pissed him off.

US 1, south of Waycross, Ga., east side of the road, look for the 1/4 mile long chain link fence, north end of property has Shay roadster bodies in crates lining inside of fence, ask nice and the fellow will show you his inside museum <grin>.

"That yard between Bunnell and Daytona", that's exactly what I'm looking for -- I'll have tools in the back of the truck -- any better directions? If it's a secret, PM me.

Thanks, I may adjust my travels to include cheesburgers, and I've met some of the nicest people over eggs, bacon, and grits.
