This is first real HAMB thread I started. It's a 52 F-3, I'm converting to a dually 4x4 with power steering and good brakes. also using straight 6, 300 and 3x1 barrel carbs... as purchased for $100 Converting to 4 wheel drive using a narrowed 72 ford Dana 60 with some 80's dodge outers and external selector hubs. (a lot of work just so the tire don't stick out, but I'm going for the Marmon Herrington look.... I spliced in a section of newer frame to install a saginaw crossover steering box, also running a hydraulic ram ***ist cylinder
I've built the driveshafts and welding in place;</O <O</O> <O Im 99% sure the bed is from a Model AA, Im using all rough cut oak for the planks, Its about finished, just need to dis***emble to stain/seal wood and paint frame. <O </O The body was too far gone for my skills to repair, so I got a donor truck for the cab, hood and fenders and parted the rest out (someone here now has the running 8BA.) all work and paint was done in my garage, but I cant take credit for spraying it. Only minor modifications have been done to the exterior and interior, keeping with the factory look. <O </O This is first real HAMB thread I started. Ive got a 2 year build thread going on a Pirate4x4.com here - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=572435 with more pics and links. sorry for the size of the post, i'm adding to the "Tech Month Smackdown
Wow, I just got finished reading the entire thread you linked on the other board. Great build up for sure !
when i heard about this post i thought "oh boy" but now that i've seen it i'm realy diggin the hell out if it. very well done. alot of good info if you follow your link to the 4x4 forum.
thanks for the nice comments......... i wasn't sure how my truck would be received on HAMB. I never had a "tech" thread here, and after reading what the "winner" gets i decided to do a little work and add some details/photo's to my original post.... fyi, This is homebuild by me in my garage. I've only farmed out 1 or 2 things and a friend painted it in my garage. here's a few more shots of the rear suspension and axle.....I designed and built the triangulated 4-link rear with airbags. all brackets on frame and axle were welded with a Hobart 187 this is how everything looked 2 years ago..... and the other is my favorite view of the rear....
I wanted power steering, and crossover style drag-link/tie rod ***y. I modified this power steering box a few years ago for a different truck, and thought i might at well use it on this truck. I tapped the box in two places to use the pressure fluid to run a hydraulic cylinder to ***ist with the tie-rod movement. "It will move a boulder next to the tire at idle without even straining the pump". I cut a "donor" section out of jeep frame to mount the steering box and just welded in. (it only fits in this location because i removed the factory leaf springs and replaced with ones about 12" longer, giving room to locate the box in the needed location.) the 1st is one of the few before pics i've got... not much to see. 2nd is a similiar angle before painting. this is just an overall shot before the cab got put back on.
well, i was thinking about adding more technical writing stuff, but i'm better at building that typing ......... AND when i'm checking out other build threads, i like pictures the most. So, if anyone has any specific questions i'll answer, I don't suspect many are into 4x4's but i put alot of work in this transfercase (the first 3 pics) it was actually an entire winter project about 6 years ago, the other pics are just acouple more random shots i like. Sorry for those with small bad widths, i'm done.
The old rears can be converted to a quickchange too, you need 2 of em with some sprint car parts, which i'm thinking of doing in my 51 F-3
'52, I own a '41 flatbed; and you have given me a few new ideas. (it's a driver at the moment, but needs a few "improvements") I think if ole Henry was still around; even HE would be impressed! Well done!
Wow! Very nice build. My dad has had quite a few 48-52 F-series pickups and trucks...so I always appreciate a nice one. I love the restored body and interior with the very well done update on the running gear...including the fact that you fixed the track width. Nice job. Keep the progress pics coming. Neal
wow ! i didn't know what to expect when i clicked on this thread , figured somebodys pipe dream , but you are actually doing it and it looks good , looks well thought out congrats thats gonna be slick when done !
I'm working on a friends Jeepster mud bogger right now. Has a shortened '62 Ford F250 frame with full size GM axles but I needed an inside the frame power steering box. An outside mounted box wouldn't clear the tire at full turn. Thanks for the idea of the frame section off a modern Jeep! By the way your truck looks sweet. The cl***ic blue and white is perfect. What color for the bed frame? NICE WORK!
I plan to paint the bed frame semi gloss black and the wood i'm going to stain/seal with a deck sealer, i've tested a few colors....... a medium to light brownish is what i'm going for......
Glad you shared this - Hey it's HAMB Bonneville tow truck friendly! Just slide a few tool boxes and camper on the back. What high water, man? You are a hell of a craftsman.
got back to this project with a 2 year break, build the dump bed system from used parts, a power wagon control valve, jeep snow plow pump&reservior, large mower deck hydraulic cylinder and a 12 volt motor off a older ramsey winch. couple in progress pics;
temp installed the radiator and grill, i painted the radiator with 2000 degree clear engine paint..... i'm wondering if it will last. anyone done this before?
