Quick question to you Merc guys, i'm planning on taking the steering wheel off to restore it but the guy that had the merc before me said it was difficult to take it off and didn't put it on right so now it wiggles. anyway my question is will a regular steering wheel puller work from Napa or Autozone?

I believe that starting in 1940 the Ford/Merc wheel hubs had the two bolt holes for conventional pullers to be used on them.

Prior to that year you had to used a knocker(same as for the axle) or the KRW yoke-type puller.

I used a regular steering wheel puller. Leave the nut loose on the steering shaft, or just be careful of the threads on the end of the steering column shaft. It is easy to deform the threads with the puller.

The steering wheel is held in place with a woodruff key.

Hey IDK what you mean by it wiggles but these ****ers are keyed, not splined, with a drop in keyway. If that was installed improperly you might have a situation on your hands. Look into it and best of luck.

Oh, and to answer your question, I have a regular steering wheel puller. Nothing special.

  7. Best place I ever found for steering wheel puller bolts is common engine fan bolts. Especially the ones with different thickness spacers. Almost all are 5/16 fine threads in varying lenths. Was out in a junkyard without my bolt set when I came to that realization!

I think my puller bolts that fit '40---Fords and sixties GM are Quadrajet front bolts. Be careful when shopping...the last couple years of computerized Q's often are held on by metric bolts.
I have a KD puller made for 2-bolt steering wheels and 3-bolt balancers...I keep the bolts I use with it held into their holes with nuts, a lesson from years of repeated searching when I need to pull something...
