Is the '09 drags at MoKan this year? What is the date? Here is my latest project. 1959 Opel Olympia CarAvan. Is it traditional enough?
We're guessing it's gonna be the 22nd of August this year. And that'd be cool to bring to the drags. I'd definately be poring over it.
Unless I want to hack the crap out of it, a V-8 won't fit. Since it's a German GM product, I was thinking Super Duty 151ci with whatever tranny. It has a 4.22:1 rear end from the factory and weighs 2000lbs stock. Your thoughts?
I would run a new Ecotech 2.2 since these are actually Opel designed. You can get some serious power out of an Ecotech either EFI or Webber carbed. If not, run a quad-4. I know that a 60 degree V6 fits under the hood of an Opel GT without much modification. This may be an option for you as well for the little tourer.
"Hack the crap out of it" and put in a V-8. It's nice to be able to go fast at the Drags. Whatever you do, do it quick..August sneaks up on you... Good luck, -Abone.
I'm going like no tomorrow on this one. If the car was a shell, I would hack the crap out of it. I've got a 500 caddy with a turbo 400, by measurement, I would only need a 3 inch driveshaft. But since the car is all there, minus motor and trans, gonna keep it original. Motor issues. 350 won't fit, 60 degree v6 might (got one at the machine shop I can snag). The problem is, The 2.8-3.4 have junk lower ends. The 2.5 has all torque, but no power. Ford is not an option. (My business partner and I had 2 of the rarest fox bodied mustangs ever built. He got killed in his, I sold my very shortly after that.) The ecotec and quad 4 aren't traditional enough. A buddy of mine said I should build a killer 20/22r hybrid, which I have everything to do that (I used to race mini stocks), but it's not period correct. 4 banger options? Ideas? Iron duke hop up info?
A Quad 4 looks a lot like an offy when running 4 carbs. If your intent on the Iron Duke, get the 3.0 liter Marine block and heads as as start.
Do you have the Caddy Turbo 400? I have heard that they have a longer tail on them that the Olds Turbo 400 does, and and they both fit... Run the Caddy 500... Edit. If you dont want to use the Caddy, go for the V8 out of a Opel Diplomat. ( a 327 SBC... )
Good lord man, listen to yourself! What the hell has happened to this country?! You have plenty of room for a 500" Cad up front and even MORE room in back for another one!!!!!!!! No wonder Japan is kickin' our OEM asses up one side and down the other... Next thing, you'll be worried about where to put the cupholders...
Flamedabone is the only fucker that can build a car in this timeframe...............that is the GAUNTLET Mr KillerB! Are you up to it? Stuff real HP into that lil thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
B-man - you gonna take that??? PS: After further review, you could run one 500" Cad up front and TWO in back, side by side! I saw this done with a Nova over on the Drag Cars in Motion thread, using a triple 3rd member '57 Pontiac rearend. I bet FlamedAbone could fit three Allison's in there and drive it to the HAMB Drags, ON TIME!
Hey Killer - Why not build a tastey little trailer to tow behind the Opel, with about six more 500" Caddies in it? If each one had it's own dedicated axle, you'd have a six alxle trailer AND you might give FlamedAbone a run for his money... Hmmm... If YOU don't build this, I'll have to do it. This may be my best idea EVER!!!
Dear Mr. Killer Bracing: I don't know why, but every ten years or so, something comes over me and, well, you just saw it... My apologies. Fact is, I dig Opels and wagons, so your Opel wagon is okay in my book. A 4 banger would make perfect sense... But common sense isn't even part of the equation when we're talking about building a car for the drags (in my personal opinion). It's about passion and creativity on a gut level. Bottom line is, it's your car, so you shouldn't care what we think. And I'm thinkin' about a long freight train, loaded down with hundreds and hundreds of 500" Caddilacs, each and every one built to the nuts, with heads hogged out like the Carlsbad Caverns, coffee can sized pistons, and the biggest cams that'll cram into those blocks, fogged with waves of nitrous and fueled with a heavy load of nitro!!! Yeeeaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it was a shell, I'd hack it up and do whatever I want with it. It's original, needs a little refurb and some MOTORvation. I'll have this one done pretty quick. The salt flats VW is behind it, and the 500 caddy is going in the toyota framed car that I will hand form. So back to the Opel. Motor suggestions?
A buddy of mine has one that he'll put a Ford 2.8 V6 in. He said it looks like it will fit without too much trouble. Cant say I like those engines much, though... I'd spend a bit more time for a more difficult Swap with a better engine...
How long before things are considered tradaional? Been running 20r toy since 1980 in my 29 hiboy . milled off ot now its says toy a on valve cover .Most folks think it is cool . cant break motor ,2 trans,2clutches,
How about a 3.6 liter CTS motor with 5-speed? or the Yamaha built SHO motor. I put a 3.8 Buick in my Opel GT and had a bit of struggle to keep the front suspension stock with the width of the 90 degree block. Another choice would be a twin turbo VR6 putting out about 500hp. cant get narrower than 15 degree V6.
Good suggestions. Keep them coming. I'm doing the bodywork now. Waiting on my sand-n-vac to show up so I can start on the floors. Gonna hit the HAMB drags for fun. Gonna cruise Route 66 down there and have some fun.
Snagged a 2wd s-blazer frame to put under the opel. Got a H.O. 2.8 out of a z24 Cavalier and a 4-speed saginaw with a 2.8 bell housing. Just need a 4bbl intake, HEI distributor and a 82-83 camaro clutch and I'll be rolling!
