found a running driving 83 impala, 81 malibu and 80's buick (donor cars for my 52 chevy) just wondering if anybody knows the rearend width on any of these cars? or a good site that does? im not having any trouble finding the wheelbase but the width has been a ***** i have been looking online for the last hour and havent found ****. thanks for the help
Chevy 1981 and 1980 GM G bodies will fit the best I've found, problem is 2:41 2:52 if you're lucky 2:73
cant find any measurements on the impala still the malibu and regal are the right width but the wheelbase is 7 inches short , i dont have a problem lengthening the frame but the 83 impala wheelbase is exact for a 52. anybody??
Why don't you just measure it? If it helps at all, I have a '94 Caddy Fleetwood rear axle under my '48 Pontiac convert with 235/75R15's on the stock wheels. With skirts. I'd go out and measure it for ya, but it's too cold.
Nope, Gs are full perimeter frame with a triangulated four link rear. 85-88 can have 3:42 or 3:73 rears because of the OD. the rearends are 7.5" ten bolts though (except GNs and 442s), they puke pretty easy. The GN and 442s are 8.5" ten bolts but go for enough that most step up the a 9" or 12 bolt. They also have front mount steering boxes, so you need to check if you have enough sheetmetal out front to accomodate the box.
If you're planning a frame swap, don't even waste your time on the full size cars, the rearend will fit under the fenders but the front end is way too wide. Plus the front horns have to be cut completely off to hang the front end sheetmetal. Have heard Malibu front ends need narrowing to work under a 49-52 also. Unless your stock frame is junk there's plenty of easy upgrades for it - an S10 4x4 rear will bolt right on the stock springs with a new hole for the locator pin, and if you don't want to spend the bucks on a Mustang-II kit, a Jag sedan front end unbolts and will be a lot less work than fabbing up a bunch of new body mounts to install. In fact personally given what weak, rot prone junk they are I wouldn't use an 80's GM frame under anything. Even when they're solid they bend like a piece of rubber.
