  1. Any recommendations as to brand and type of continious duty relays for various applications to ensure a constant 12v+ supply to the accessary? OEM, aftermarket etc. Summit, Jegs, Speedway, NAPA etc? Thanx, Dave

I believe that Bosch makes 12v relays with various amp ratings 5-25amps depending on the application.

Bosch is the best out there. 30amp will work well for your applications.

The generic Bosch ice-cube relays are cheep (about $3 from any wiring supply house) and are rated at 40 Amps for 12V. There are 70 Amp versions

Ditto on Bosch. Egay has the lowest prices on them.
Auto parts chains have prices exponentially higher.
My ****in head hurts now after using that big word......

Has anyone figured out a good way to mount these relays when they don't have the little tab? These type are free from late model cars at Pick-N-Pulls, but I haven't thought up a way to mount 'em yet.

You know the relay on 50s vintage borg warner overdrives? They go for big bucks and I need one. Has anyone figured out how to use one of these modern types in place of the original? Thanks

I sourced a relay for a friends motorcycle, he needed a recycling relay for his high beams. Push the ****on once, the relay comes on, push the same ****on again, the relay goes off. I don't know if anyone needs this type, but it's a VW relay, much cheaper than what you'll find in the chain stores or Harley type catalogs...

Older (1980s) BMWs have the fuse box under the hood on the driver's side inner fender. On some of them, there's a couple of Bosch relays mounted in little plastic holders that clip to the side of the fuse box. Those little plastic holders come off easily and should be adaptable to mount in your car.

ive been using tyco, they were real cheap on ebay, i got 20 with holders for about $40 AUD, here in a parts shop they are about $7 each and about $6 for the holder, they have tabs and all seem to do their thing ok.
the recycling relay sounds interesting, what is it used for in the vw and what model.

In the past I have used velcro to mount these small relays. A little easier to service them when you have to.

I believe you need a DPDT (Double pole double throw) relay. Check out this link for instructions, http://www.cl***ictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/over/drive.htm

bluebolt, I want to operate the 3 speed overdrive in my 54 f100 as it was intended. Sounds like the design in your link modifies the setup like it is a six speed? Not sure. I admit I don't understand electric stuff real well.

Using a relay with your headlights does makes them a helluva lot brighter. Takes the load off of your headlight switch.

  22. on my friends merc he used a hella (bosch style) relay INSIDE the stock merc relay. he just ran wires to the stock terminals inside the realy and the stock wire to the outside.

also i use standard relays (metal ones) picked for the load i need. i don't like the look of the bosch relays.
