has anyone done up a Renault? or seen one done saw this while lookin on craigslist 1958 renault 4cv suicide front doors
There was a '59 Renault Dauphine in OKC a few years ago that had a VW 1895 dual-carb engine to replace the three-horsepower stock engine. Wild ride! Saw it one time, and then it went away somewhere.
If it says Renault, run the opposite direction as fast as possible. I'm not familiar with 4cv's but Dauphine's were without equal as the biggest POS ever ***embled on 4 wheels.
A co-worker had one of those cars, we would tip it on its side to work on it rather than crawl under it.
Had Dauphine in high school (65) - yes was a MAJOR POS - worse than a Neon - but liked the shape - would be cool with an US powertrain - Corvair maybe? Or VW... 4cv is even cooler looking IMHO
I wonder if that 4CV Renault body could be modified easily-enough to fit a VW Beetle floorpan? THAT would be some serious fun! Wild and freaky French body on a reliable and fun German pan and running gear! Hmmmmm...!
I built a 1959 renault 4cv with a full tube round ch***is and roll cage. It used a vw narrowed front beam with disc brakes and a irs rear suspension and transaxle with disc brakes. I adapted a japan spec subaru fuel injected twin turbo 2.0L boxer engine with all custom header and intercooler piping. Rated at 300hp. I widened the *** end about 5 inches to get some meat under it. I built a custom inclosure in the rear parcel shelf area that housed a boost controled intercooler fan ***embly that was fed fresh air via a roof mounted air intake scoop. The enclosure also housed the fresh air intake filters that were fed air via custom side body air vents. Man I'm tellin you the amount of engineering I put into this car was amazing. I used to just sit in the garage and stare at it for a week before I finally decided how to fabricate something. I unfortunately decided to sell it, cause im an idiot. Truth is I couldn't afford to buy a $3000 vw transaxle. But here are some pics. for your pleasure. Its deffinately a unique car if you do it right, well worth the effort. Good luck!!
The Gray Blue one doing the burn out in Metalshapes post is VW powered. I think it's like a 10 second car. It's from Belgium. And to keep this post on target, the 57 Chevys are from Belgium too. Here's the link to the site, it's VW so don't freak out. Look through the photo section, there's all kinds of cool iron. http://www.offdrc.co.uk/index.htm
in High School a friend had one..I could stand up through the sunroof and start jumping up and down pulling on the roof edge on the up bounce and with my buddy pumping the gas pedal we could pull nice wheelies..probably had really bad shocks...
The cv's were kinda neat, but my brother had a '59 Dauphine, and that POS was a French Yugo. I had a '59 Triumph TR-10 at the time, and that was 10 times the car...........
really freak em out and put an engine in the front and switch up the louvers from back to front, slam the bajeezus out of it and shave anything that shows Renault
My first car in 65. It was a real hot rod as it had a racing stripe and "STP" stickers. The picture is the result of an encounter with a 57 Chevy.
Mines not a Renault..Its a 59 NSU Prinz..originally it had a 2cyl...rear engine, most of the motor was gone...Took a VW engine, ind rear, narrowed the trans axles 10" to get it under the car..used the VW shift tube, inc. it into the orig. floor of the car,Kept the original front susp. Reconfigured a 52 Desoto hood to get the height needed for the doghouse,it gets air from under, but thats all that needed to keep cool.suicided the doors,ect..ect..could talk all day about her..My husband built this for me 15 yrs ago..wasnt until he got the wagon done that i got to drive it full time..Now i put about 5000 miles a season on it.. hopeing for more this summer. This is my daily driver from 4/1-11/1...my mini will sit on a 4x8 sheet of plywood...She will cruize 80mph all day long...Thanks for letting me show her off.
