Our car club is thinking about building a tandem car trailer, we have steel, parts, skilled welder, etc., but no plans. Has anyone built their own? Does anyone have a set of plans to share or sell? I know that plans are available online commercially but what the hell fun is that? Thanks for any help or advice.
you don't really need plans, i've built dozens of them. most important things is to get axles just at right locations so you have some tounge weight but too much, get axles square and same distance from center of ball at coupler, spaced out so the tires don't rub when you have a lot of weight on. if you do that it will pull well and not have vibrations which is pretty annoying. i would just go measure a factory one i liked and use their design fer FREE.
At one time Northern Hydraulics sold trailer plans. Tractor Supply sells trailer parts and they may offer plans as well.
Someone in your club is bound to have a friend with a car hauler. Just borrow it from them for a day to use as a pattern.
check with barry2952 - he built his own frame and suspension for his trailer, so he might be able to offer some advice. dan
Do a google search for trailer plans and from there you'll see what the proper locations should be... Roadrat
http://www.ssapubl.com/product.aspx?nbr=B800 I've had great luck using Steve Smith's stuff over the years.
i build them everyday, just built one today, if you need any help, parts or pieces let me know i can send them to you or offer up any advice you may need. i build them and sell them, but i also use them everyday so i have a pretty good idea of how they work, they really are pretty simple
Thanks Rowdy..If you don't mind I would like you to PM me your phone number and email address so I can contact you after we get started. Looking forward to this project, it will be a lot of fun and we are always looking for help and advice. Our car club is Rezrodders in South Dakota. thanks, george
