Attention Pinstripers Wannabees, seriously!

  1. Geez, see what happens when you stay in the shop for a couple o' days. I haven't been on & I missed out, oh well, I was finally getting my cab set on the frame. I'd like to also agree w/ all the great ideas of the first works being posted/ auctioned or contested. I've only had a few opportunities to try my hand at it, but will also submit the first attempt. Then my most current, on my truck. I, for one, appreciate the gesture that you've presented, Vance. Even if I didn't get in quick enuff for the 1shot, ha. Hope to see all the new work soon.

  2. Also, I justed wanted to add, all I have is a Mack 00. I was wanting to ask everyone's opinion on those Kafka brushes. Are they worth a damn, or not. I like the Mack, but I sometimes have issues w/ the short handle. We've mostly only used this brush for touch ups on delivered vehicles, in a production body shop. I've since rescued it in hopes to learn the craft. Thanks, for such a great thread.

    Vance,

Thanks for doing this. It got me to PM Safariknut last week, we talked on the phone for an hour and then the boys and I spent a few hours at his place Sunday afternoon. When a guy is trying to explain how to lay a line and then turns around to his 25th anniversary Trans Am and starts striping on it, you KNOW he's dedicated!

Thanks for doing this and thanks to Ray for a great afternoon.

Now I understand why all the Stripers remember my older son's name so well. Courtland is always called Court for short so Courtauld's Coatings is something you've grown up with!

If you can, email me your instructions and I'll add it to the lesson we got from Ray. If it gets a bit warmer, we'll set up in the garage and the boys and I will practice on some panels.

    Hey Vance,

    This is Verne, Danny's dad-

I want to say thanks for all the how-to info, the paint, the willingness to help a stranger get started. I appreciate it very much and maybe someday I can help someone else too. Here's one I did. A friend found out that I was striping and brought over a couple of other colors, yours is the blue-green in the pic. I'll have some more for you soon

I realize they're amateurish, but I am getting better thanks to your tips

Actually I am left handed. The only thing I have to watch is when I letter I have to go backwards or pull out my mahl stick.

  8. I am also of the,"southpaw persuasion" and I letter in the same manner as a right-handed person. My uncle, who was a prototype model maker and dioramist for most of his life was actually the one who inspired me to learn to letter.

When he found out I was doing striping and such,he made a smart-***ed remark to my grandfather that I could NEVER be a sign painter because I would always be smudging my work.I learned to adapt by supporting my left hand with my right(I STILL can't successfully use a mahl stick)and have never had any trouble since then(about 1960).

Revenge is always sweet as they say.I got mine when I stopped by my uncle's shop to pick up an old Indian relic knife my cousin wanted me to have.In the course of our conversation,my uncle asked me if I could paint a sign for him as his regular painter was out of town and he needed it right away.

Without hesitating,I remarked,"Gee Uncle Arthur,I really don't think I could. You see I'm left-handed and I'd always be running into my work!" After his jaw stopped bouncing off the floor,he couldn't believe I had remembered that all these years and did something I had never seen him do:he apologized!

We all had a pretty good laugh about it and I did wind up doing his sign;but I charged him full price!

Sorry for the rant;I've on a kind of memory trip tonight.Read a post about something that hit REALLY close to home.

yeah, i know this is almost a year old. so where is all the art from the newbies?

anyway, i figured i'd use this as its already a newbie thread to ask if anyone is out here in the philly area that can let me know where a good supply place is where i can get brushes/paint/etc. delco county specifically is where i am. my son wants to try and i figired i'd give it a go too. part relaxation/ part fun.

If you don't see any new art, don't blame anyone but me. I never sent out the goods. One thing lead to another and in the end, the paint got stuck back behind a bunch of stuff and I forgot all about it. So actually, thanks for bringing this back up to my attention. I'll see about getting that stuff out real quick. I have a surprise included in each box too. I forgot I put that stuff in there too.

I still have everyone's names and addresses saved to disc too. So if you got a message from me way back, you're still an intended target. Just sit tight. You'll have everything in time to get warmed up for Detroit. And you really shouldn't miss that/ Especially if you bring a brush!

1-Shot has a list of dealers on their site. If those dealers
don't carry brushes, you can buy direct from mackbrush.com

The one thing about the HAMB that still bothers me is that folks tend to get so stoked about what they're reading that they tend to NOT read everything. I'm guilty of this, I'll admit it. Hell, I even did it here on this thread... keep reading

This thread was actually the first of two offerings. BOTH threads had all the 12 HAMBers fill the spots for the paint that was available. The folks in this thread have all received their paints. In a post above from earlier tonight, I mentioned something about not sending out some paint. That was in reference to the second offering. Now that I realize that I failed to send those out, I'll correct that over site shortly. So now that I've said that; I don't have any more.

This thread is almost a year old and since it came back up, I've gotten several PMs asking for some paint. So, it's safe to say that I'm fresh out of paint now.

If you are a**** those who want to learn to stripe, PLEASE learn. It's GREAT fun and if you get good, you can make a little cash. If you get REALLY good, you can make a little more cash. Do it for the love of the art, not the money.
