I'd like this alot more AFTER I fix it and dont have to worry about falling through it.

Rust sucks. I have saved rusted out hulks to try and save money on the buy in to a project but I finally figured out I'm ahead in the end if I start with something better. Unless you just want to be able to say you fixed something most people couldn't, or really enjoy the challenge it's not worth it.

    rust has its place,
on the floor of my 86 work truck i beat up in the mountains......No problem.

but not on a finished vehicle,

It takes skill to remove rust in many cases, and most lack the desire to do the job right.

I do drive cars with rust, but the plab is to get rid of all of it.

  8. You sure your on the right board?? Ironicaly your name is, oh so close to being right!

I will say one good thing about rust. If it were not for it, we wouldn't have the metal finishing, caped crusader superhero of the HAMB, Jim Sibley!:p

    Well played sir!

  13. Some people take their comments to the extreme- you can differentiate between a car suffering from skullyosis and a survivor- rust alone does not make the rat rod.

To me, going for "perfect" is akin to a street rod, or a new car- both are trying to look showroom fresh, never been driven or touched, and most don't have much character.

A survivor like the 1st Model A posted says, "Fuck you, I've already lasted longer than you ever will, and I'll keep going long after you're gone" (to the Camry, for example). Pardon the Franch, the car says it in a more dignified way. It also says "I'm good enough like this, I don't want or need that fancy BS".

And, on this subject I agree with 29nash. You expressed some good points, especially that a car isn't going to disintegrate immediately, and it's nice not having to be overly concerned about the precious thing getting hurt.

  14. The VW doesn't look good like that. It looks like it was faked, not like it earned it.

  15. Change "rust" to "hot rods" and you sound like a restoration purist, or a "square".

  16. What about the 15 Oz. coupe? I don't know that it's rusty, but it's not shiny and the wheels aren't polished, and such.

  17. I hate rust, I like patina on the right car, Model A's, Dueces....I'm not a shinny car guy, can't hack 3 hours of cleaning every time I drive the car, so I like an aged look or suede.

  20. Well, since it was YOU that did the changing, it makes YOU sound like the "square".

That right there just cracked me up:D

I don't like rust, but I bought a rusty basket case because it was affordable to me. I sold off parts of it that I didn't need and came out money ahead. If I had an extra 10 grand laying around would I have bought a resto car and cut it up? maybe, but I don't think so.I also like the 'save' factor of my car. It had layed in pieces in a barn and outside in the yard since 1973. I think the old guy I got it from is dead now. Who knows what his kids would have done with that old rusty crap in the barn?

Used to, I wouldn't drive a car until the paint was perfect. Now I hate paint. You guys have me considering cold blueing my next project, though. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

BTW, I find it funny that I just read through this same debate of a restoration forum.

To me, a rusty car is like an orphaned dog, if you don't take it home someone might "put it to sleep". Of course, as soon as I get that dog home I give him a bath and deworm him.

i myself dont care for rust as living in the norteast it devours all metal eventually if hoarded tin isnt protected all you find is a giant lump of iron oxide that at one time was a vehicle

  30. you had to dig that one up
