Im about finished insulating and getting ready to drywall. I got to thinking maybe I should put some sort of fan/venting system in before I go any further. Id like to be able to do bodywork and paint in here with the garage door closed, or at least nearly closed. I want to keep the neighbors fairly happy. Its 18x28. The garage door is 8' tall. The entire inside is open, peaked ceiling not flat. I have room for a fan above the garage door, but off to the left or right only (part of the truss goes up the middle area). There are no windows just the garage door and the man door. Any ideas for moving air for sanding and painting would be appreciated. Oh, and yes I belong to the Garage Journal. So many of those garages are just show places though. I would prefer some real world advice from folks that actually use their garages to work in. Mark
I used a house heating unit fan....It moves a ton of air and if you box it up you can fit a hepa house filter to catch the paint
I use strategicly placed box fans with furnace filters. Works pretty well especially in a garage I rent. Can't do something too permamnent.
I have an old I mean Old 16" hd exhaust fan that ****s like a mf. I have it mounted infront of a new Louvered shutter vent you can search grainger to find them, It works awesome. I would mount it opposite the garage door, that way you can crack the garage door a tad and it will clear out you space in a hurry... If you mount it above the garage door you wont get any cross flow...make sense? here is a link to a shutter fan...will keep heat in when not in use and varmits out... http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4YN20
Hey bro ...the best advice I can give you is to contact a local body shop and and ask them where they get there exhaust filters from.they are inexpensive and will keep your neighbors happy.I do work from home in my garage, and have a home built paint booth that works great, and the only neighbors that know I have it are the ones I have told.....good luck and p.m me if you have further questions.
I googled a how to and they came up with some nice idea and showed you how to do it . Basicly box fans and filters like Slowand Low 63 did . I also saw where a guy painted his car outside under those carport type tents with plactic sides and fans . His turned out very well too . All you need is 4 sides and a way to get the bad air out and good air in .When I paint my car & truck I am using box fans and filters . They all work for a car or two and not to costly !
I have a 16" barn fan from the local farm supply store. It has a sealed, explosion-proof motor. I built an insulated, hinged cover to seal it when not in use. It really ****s!
Some good info, thanks. I never even considered the part about motors and sparks and paint. It sounds like opening the garage door just enough for some airflow and use a larger cfm fan in the ceiling other side of the garage could be a good way to go. I already have it wired and switched because I was thinking about installing a roof vent fan to move out heat in the summer.
