A freind has a 46 Ford truck with a 53 mec flat head it has a 3 carb set up on it. What are the steps to properly adjust carbs. Motor runs rough. and Plugs are black. Thanks
Best advice I got here was to just get it running well on the middle carb only. Later, work in the other carbs with a progressive linkage and jet them down. There is a lot of info chronicled here about what jets you might try depending on engine size and altitude you run at. This is not just a running rough problem, it can develop into eating a valve and seat and hence the whole block. A buddy was running 3 carbs on straight linkage, not progressive, super rich and it caused a valve to carbon up, hang up then when it broke it destroyed the entire valve seat area. He had to throw that block away it was so bad. If you're around San Antonio you can give me a call and I can show you how I've set up my f/h. I'm breaking it in on just the center carb, will add the front and rear later.
Enlighten us about what kind of carbs. Tell us a little more about the motor; displacement, cam, ignition and whether or not you're running straight or progressive linkage?
My best advice would be to take up drinking....HEAVILY. Good luck. Just kiddin'. Get the center one working like stated above. Then tinker on the other two with a progressive.
Make sure , let me say that again. Make sure that all of the butterflies are closed when it's supposed to be at idle. with the engine not running disconnect the lilnkage and make sure that each of the carbs butterflies are closed. Then adjust your linkage accordingly. I run 3 97's with straight linkage with no problems.
At least the butterflies for the secondary carbs, the center idle carb should be cracked open slightly.
Sure, but it kinda defeats the purpose of having three carbs. Just make solid base gaskets from thin steel for the outboard carbs and block the fuel lines to them as well. Good luck!
