Mine is glass. I looked around for a steel roadster body and the prices that people wanted for rusting, hammered dog crap were unreal. I came across this old un-used Speedway body for $400.00, and I was under way. My car may have a glass body, but 75% of the parts are Ford, so who's to say it isn't a Ford. It has a '37 Ford front axle and spindles, Model A split front bone, F-1 front brakes, '36 Ford split rear bone, Model A horn, Guide headlights '36 Ford front wheels, and I could go on and on. It has a manual tranny, cowl steering, a real generator, dual point dizzy and a lot of other cool features. It stops great, steers great, handles awesome and is faster than I want to go. I also have less than $5000.00 in it including tax title and license.

  2. The reason you will get so much grief here about "glass" cars, isn't because they are crap or because they are "fake". It's because this is a "Traditional Hotrod" website. NOT a Car Craft,Street Rodder,American Rodder, website. The cars built with old speed parts, saved parts, restored bodies, repaired bodies, swapmeet bargins, are not ordered through a catalog or pulled off a shelf. Brookville has made it possible for guys to have a steel car and not get all the shit about "glass" cars. Are they "real",well,NO! Are they traditional...NO! They are meerly another option to resurecting a rusted out "REAL STEEL" car.
I will say that there are many Traditional "looking" cars that I have seen that were great!

Here's one of my favorites! Glass car...with many old speed parts! Great look!

Here's another one, that everybody SWEARS it's a glass car when they see it,BUT IT'S NOT!

BTW-I can't believe a thread with "Glass Cars" in the title is still open,LOL!!!!

  5. This argument gets old and I'm way over it. The original poster asked for pictures not some lame ass opinion. Seems most of the ones that have such a vocal opposition don't own a Hot Rod at all, just some other shitbox. I've built and owner Glass Cars and Steel Cars (real Henry or Louis/Gaston and Brookville) Each on has its merits and problems. Many old steel cars do have a soul that is missing from a new body, steel or otherwise, but others are just old devoid of this (kind of like people)
This car fired up Hot Rodding when we were stuck in a time of complete Resto Rods and when it appeared on the cover of Hot Rod it woke up the inner Hot Rodder in many and got us back to go faster cars.

If Phil Cools car doesn't get your blood flowing and make you smile then you aren't a Hot Rodder! And Yeah it's glass. And it's an AMBR winner when they still looked like Hot Rods.
I don't care what they are made of if they are done right. It's kind of like titties, when someone says they are fake, I say as long as I can touch them, they're Real!

  6. This thread could use some comic relief - I saw these posted on another thread here on the hamb. There are lots of great looking glass cars on this thread. But it is stuff like this I just don't like.

Wonder if the wooden spokes guys hated wire wheels, who then both hated steelies, who all then hated chrome reversed, who then all joined up against those crappy looking mag wheels, etc. etc. EXCEPT of course, the guys who actually wanted better performance - you know the lakes, drag and oval track racers (and aviators!). They always wanted the lightest, fastest, most powerful, shiny-est? and razzle- dazzle-ist stuff they could get. I like the go fast guy's point of view. If fast involves a little hi-tech, try to work it in your "theme rod" best you can. Gary

I've only been a member here for a little over a year, but I think the HAMB has a bi-polar disorder. The general consensus of opinions seems to change on a day by day basis. One day, fiberglass is the devil, the next it's great. On one ocasion, someone will post their car that has disc brakes, coil-over suspension, a cd player, etc. and everyone rips the guy a new ass, then the next time everyone says, "it's your car, do what you want."

    Just a quick observation. :D

As far as fiberglass goes, I work for a company that manufactures fiberglass parts, although for the RV industry and not the automotive aftermarket, so I see the stuff all day long. I suppose for me, it would be a last ditch effort.

I was wondering when this one was going to creep in:D

I myself do not have a problem with a glass car. I have never built one nor have I ever owned one but that does not rule out that I never will. In fact this thread has got me thinking about building a glass car now after looking at the photos of the 32's that have been posted.

Lets face it these are not kit cars at all, all your getting is a body that you still have to do tons of work on but it has no rust issues!

Disney's, first picture (I just wanted to clarify that) and then my '32 I'm putting together, although not Hamb friendly, I guess. I've been a hot rodder since I was a kid and always wanted a '32 Highboy, can't afford a real one and still do the other things my wife and I like to do (retired), so it's a glass body. I guess I'm a terrible person-----

who cares if its steel or glass? if YOU built it, it's a real car.

"What is commonly known as "fiberglass" today, however, was invented in 1938 by Russell Games Slayter as a material to be used as insulation"

hmm, seems to me that the concept of fiberglass has been around for a long time.

although i prefer steel, fiberglass is a great way to go if your building a car that'll see some time at the drags (lightweight, quicker times) or alot of miles in all kinds of weather, without rotting.

Fake. Just like a Brookville is fake. I don't as long as it has the right look.

ok ill throw my 2 pennies to the wind the way I see it is the term "real" is meaning that it was a real ford ...etc.. made by ford at a ford plant I have no problems with glas cars just don't try to pawn them off as a "real" ford ... as far as the roth comment the man was in to everything it seemed he was always pushing the envlope god rest his soul

to be honest.. whether its a reproduction steel body or fiberglass body it still is not a "real" 1932 car. This does not mean its not a "real" coupe or hot rod.. If anything it would be a 2001 "32' replica coupe" (of course year changes with production of New body) I still think the original cars are deserving of respect more due to the history they have.. kinda like respecting your elders..

  29. this cars glass that we built in 1992 with the 4banger then rebuilt with the flatty and 32 frame in 1996 spose this makes this car non traditional too
