Can't see it anywhere, so since Sunday is almost over here, I figure it must be my turn to start. I'm done with the final details o this thing. The decals were a bitch, the windows wouldn't stick and the Dzus fastener decals fell off the first time I picked it up after they had dried. So it's now used two Pro Mod Chevy decal sheets and I've lost count of how many tiny letter decals I wasted. My attempt at doing the screws that hold the belly pan s is a bit lame too. Took it out to the lake for a shakedown, we run for the record tomorrow at dawn. That done, I can now get back to building the Jalopy that was the original plan before I got side-tracked by this thing.
Great stuff guys ! ... pretty wild stuff to say the truth ! last week i've tried a watson like panel job on revell's 59 skyliner ... Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki I was almost pleased with the result but unfortunatly i've got some fucking tape and paint problem, so i had to strip it and redo it ... so i currently in primer stage again !
I would have hung myself after all that work and have to strip it!! Damn that looks nice, I always get paint creep under my masking, no matter what I use and how well I apply the mask! No showable progress for me right now, doing stuff like rear axle and motor induction set ups. It all looks like ass right now until I refine it. Doc.
How many of you guys bother with inter-stage clear, so if you have a problem you only have one layer to worry about? Zed, what kind of tape are you using? Plain old masking tape, or vinyl?
Problem on using inter stage clear is how thick the pain gets. Up until I moved away from Melbourne I used to judge model contests (VERY different from US comps!!) You would loose points on a perfect paint job that obliterated the detail. I dunno but I like my models to be as realistic as possible so the more pain layers the less it looks real to me. Kinda brings me to another rant, I have been checking out Scale Auto's web site and every model builder there uses aftermarket this and that, like tie rod ends, pulleys, brake systems seat belts and brackets. I hate it. It just takes away from real model building. OK, so you started with a kit, but how many build it out of the box? No one!! Now when I was judging you could pick the aftermarket laden models from the ones where all that was owner built. There were always pissed off guys that spent $200 bucks on their model and lost to a guy that only paid for the kit and made everything himself. Now before you jump on me about this, yes I do scratch build complete models but they are O/T for here and are all in museums. This actual model building is a dying art. Ok, buy a resin flatty Im OK with that, but wire it, plumb it and make your own throttle linkages dont buy them, that makes you a gold chainer!! Doc.
Thank you guys ! I don't think the problem is really the tape, i believe i was a little bit too hard on the x-acto knife ! i'm not sure about the tape anyway... not vinyl for sure ... Probably will try a coat of clear at least on the first coat of metallic...
That will do it for sure. Your car reminds me of a Caddy Convertible I did back in the late seventies. Gold base with a candy blue over that. Taped off the scallops and shot the blue...then shot the heck out of it with a pellet gun. JoHann or Palmer kit.
been working on this '34. so far i've built the rear suspension, built the motor mounts, set the engine back through the firewall, and now i'm putting together the front axle assembly so i can set a ride height for the front end.
thanks. i'm also working on a 53 ford f100. its chopped and dropped. it's getting wild watson flames. no pics of that yet, but i'll get some after the chop is done so you dont see how ugly it looks now!
Neat stuff this week and a few for inspiration. I always had trouble with paint and masking, probably because I get impatient. I used foil for the last couple, costs a bit more than tape but works a treat. Doc, I'm with you. I prefer chopping and changing kit parts. The '34 pictured is a resin body, that I modified slightly and everything else is from other kits, my junk box or fabricated from other stuff. Glad I'm not big into collecting trophies, just lookin at neat models.
zed, falconwagon, skinanbones---you guys are killin me with your skills! makes me want to work on all those unfinished kits I have. Cant wait to see the final product zed!
badass fucking stuff this week, god damn! ..everyone of you..awesome stuff! Another slot car body almost done for ebay.... Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki
That's some great work guys. I haven't touched a model in about 12 years. I'm about to start building again, with my son. I was just wondering what glue everyone uses. I recently pulled some of my models out to discover some pieces were falling off. I don't know if it's the glue, time or just my bad work. Is there a scale model site out there with the same quality as the the h.a.m.b.? Thanks.
Woodguy, try Tenax 7R for your "glue". It is a liquid solvent that will fuse the parts together. Between that and some super glue you should be all set. As for a scale site try "Traditional Rods and Kustoms in scale" - http://trakinscale.proboards105.com or "Kustom Kemps in miniature" - http://mrmetallic.proboards49.com/
