I have the chance to buy a 1950 ford truck rear end it is the perfect width for my 1931 roadster my questions are? 1.Are they a strong rear end if I were to run a 4 speed with 300hp/300tq 2.What kind of rear is it?Dana? 3.What gears were usually put in the rear? 4.Are there parts avalible? Thanks 27
The weak spot is the tapered axle with key. They are usually 4:11 ratio in trucks. Although I had a 3:78. Don't use it, you'll be sorry.
No tapered axle or keys.I could not hurt one with a 351 4v clevland in a 52 F-1 ran it hard for years. Was geared a little low for interstate driving but was the cats ass for rodding around town. This was the boss clevland with larger clutch and 4 speed like I said was bullet proof for me anyhow.
Its a Dana 41. Gear parts are tough to find but brake parts are common with the later 9 inch. Have a good width, 5x5.5 bolt pattern. 3.92 gears are also a pretty common ratio. The best part is you can pick one up cheap maybe even free as the f1 guys upgrade to a 9inch for better gear selection.
I put a 49 rear on a model a a few years ago (same as 50)..... it is a little bit too wide. gear ratio was a 4.11, and was kinda fun,,, but it looked a bit wide.
