We have a customer with an LS3 engine (fly by wire ) electric throttle cable , nowhere for the TV cable to get a tug !! He wants us to put a manual valve body in the 700R4 trans , has anyone got any info on such a mod,is it even doable ?? Thanks
I had a driveshaft customer that had done that in a 67 Impala. His valve body shifted in standard manner instead of reverse. I had trouble moving the car without killing it because it engaged into a tall gear before I could get into first. I'm sure it's something you get used to. Can you talk the guy into a 4L60E ******? It's solenoid operated and computer controlled liike that engine. And that's how much I know about this stuff.
Cheers , we were going to hook up the pedal , the customer suggested the manual valve body treatment, jury is still out . All suggestions greatfully received.
There are a coulpe ways to do it and not one of them is going to be simple. Depends on what you already have and what you still need to get. Run the trans that was hooked to the motor and pcm will be the simplest solution cheapest, proven most r&d you will ever have done already. (Occam's razor) What pcm & harness are you using? Some guys have ran a 2002 pcm with a cable operated tb and modified the harness (CHANGED THE PLUG ENDS to match on the engine side or computer side) and then re-tuned the pcm for LS3 specs on the engine and 700r4 specs on the trans. Going to need a real good tuner who knows his ****. (its been done on ls1truck.com) Fabbing an arm to tug on the cable off of the pedal or tb shaft should be do-able, will it work? Might be able to have a electric solenoid to pull on the cable if you can figure out how to signal it. Tci has a constant pressure vale body to help with the problem but still need some mid throttle control over the cable.
There is a manaul valve body for 4L60's, to operate them as full manual without the computer. Would he consider swapping for one of those and going that way?
If you run a cable shifted 700R4 then you need to install a lockup kit. Check with lokar they may have a bracket to install lever on throttle body. I would sugest trying to talk him into the transmission that was installed behind that engine. Can be calibrated to shift more firm if that is what he wants and also to compensate for gear changes in the rear.
Found this for ya but ,,The pics are gone now WTF HAPPENS TO THEM ???? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47490 Maybe that will help reading or get you in touch with the guy who did it. find out if it worked or blew up?? I also thought there was a way to eliminate that cable and run it off of va***e but I cant find it. Perhaps I was only dreaming about that? Dean at Street and Perfomance might have some good info ??
I've also got The Toy Shop Transmission's Mike on the job too he's our trans Guru, all info shared is great Thanks
is the TV cable still needed when running a manual valve body? i'm no expert, but the cable controls pressure which controls the shifts. do you still retain the cable to alter the pressure even though you are now shifting it manually? i installed a reverse pattern manual valve body and left the cable disconnected and smoked the trans almost immediately. isn't cable adjustment critical? carb manufactures have different brackets to keep the pull ratio close to factory specs. will you run into problems hooking the cable to the gas pedal because of this?
