My master cylinder is shot and I need a new one. Who sells them? Or is it possible that i can fit a dual cylinder from some other car? I remember reading a thread about using a dual chevy truck (?) MC on a Merc but now I cant find it. Is it possible to use chevy MC? Thanks, Tomste
FATMAN makes an adapter that allows you to use a (65?) mustang dual master. I have it in my merc. Theres a thread on the subject, I think someone even put a pattern of the adapter if you want to make your own.
I was mistaken, the pattern was for an adapter for a steering box. Since your a new guy I'll let you in on a tool that the hamb has, up top where it says search, type in 50 mercury master cylinder or try 49 as most posts start with 49-51 mercury this will bring up any post or threads on the subject. I found a few while looking for the one with the pattern. Just a hint for your future Questions. I would have to say the bracket is under $40.00 u.s. Through Fatman Fabrications. They are an alliance vendor so you can get a discount if you become an alliance member. PLUG! PLUG!
Yes,I used the search function but I could not found the info I was looking. But,thanks for the tip about fatman fabrication,I´ll look into that. Tomste.
I would have to say you are wrong on the price of the adapter from Fatman. They are roughly 90.00 without the discount. Here is the thread you want to have a look at. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=279579
Hi guys and thanks for answers. I´m able to make that adapter by myself ,it looks pretty simple. Not sure wich way to go though, should I try to find original one or update to dual feed type? Tomste
I always feel safer driving a car with a dual chamber M/C. Even with all brand new wheel cylinders and lines, if you blow out anything with a single, you have no brakes.
serious question: If 1/2 of a dual master cylinder fails, how will you know? Isn't the only notice given when the second half fails and you have no brakes?
When half fails, you'll only have brake power to the front or back. In regular driving, you probably wouldn't feel it much, but the first hard stop you make, you'll know. I've driven cars that only had back brakes functional and when I tried to stop from any real speed I could feel it. Only front brakes would be less noticeable, I might not catch on to that until I saw a leak on the driveway or noticed my master cylinder was half empty.
I have a good original I pulled out of my 49 if you decide to go that route. I ended up using a Corvette master on the fatman adapter.
