I almost cry when I see old pixs of these race cars. I lived for every Sat and Sun during 1963 to 1968 when I raced every weekend.
I was there, my dear friends, right in the middle of the Funny Car Match Racing....Hilborns on Nitromethanse, powdered rosin, wow. what a life.....

I can only wish I was there in those days but being 28 I dont think it was possable. I saw my very first AWB at the 1996 Mopar nats I was 16 it was Brian Kohlmanns 65 coronet one of his crew locked there key's in there truck and we were helping them get them out. He opens the door of his trailer and there it was in all is glory i was frozen for what could have been 2 min or 2 days LOL that was it I had to have one so now Im building mine.

I gotta a '66 Dodge Dart, originally a slant 6 car (no motor presentlly in vehicle) that'd make a killer altered wheelbase car.

Great pictures, Mike! Here is mine:

Mike- your Goldfinger car had us on a wild goose chase awhile back at my shop. A real A-990 came to me to bring back to stock sheetmetal configuration a few month's back. We had early pictures of it at the race track, but the car itself did not really match up, as it had seen quite a life on the dragstrip, with rear quarters replaced as well as two layers of floorpans in some areas. A real mess from the doors back. Someone sent me pictures of your car, and I thought, no way, this used to be an altered??? WEll, even after unraveling all the old tub work, rusty steel and the like, it turns out there was another campaigned Goldfinger car out in the midwest. A Hemi- lightweight painted white, with gold lettering and black detail writing. I"ll see if I can scan the pictures to show you. But here is the car. It being bodyworked and painted now, back to its original lettering as well. Thanks for coming onboard to the site, and sharing with all of us. This is how we keep the love of AWB's going!!

Its thirteen pages of pictures, and took two donor cars to re-assemble.

  20. A couple months back there was a vary cool thread like this. I cant for the life of me remember who, but some one on here was telling some excelant stories from his days match racing an a\fx mopar. It was some of the best reading I have done here.
Found it! Here is a link to that thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=244107

Hey Funny, Can you give us a little history of the car? Where has it been all these years and how you got it.
Saw those cars when they first came out and love them to this day. Thanks for posting.

  24. Roger Lindamood told me those first altered wheelbase cars were really scary to drive. He said that the side windows would tip into the interior. Be interesting to hear from any of those drivers about their experiences behind the wheel of those things.

He said that the side windows would tip into the interior.

That's why all the factory AWB cars used sedan doors, so the windows wouldn't do that. eleven of the 12 original cars were hardtoops which had no window frame on the door. But they all had sedan window frames which held the window in place.

    Oh, Hell Yeah!!!!

One of my earliest childhood memories is of seeing a match race between the Ramcharger AWB '65 Dodge and Arnie Beswicks AWB Tempest (I would have only been 4 years old at the time!).... That big bad candy striped Coronet left an indelible impression on my brain and I've been hooked ever since!!!!!

Here are a couple of pics of Lee Smith's restored '65 Plymouth....

I found out about all the fiberglass through a friend,Jim Kramer had it.The rest of the car is long gone.I'm still trying to piece together the history on the Funny Car.I know it ran well into the 67 season still trying to compete with the glass bodied floppers. Here's a photo history of the car,it started out a 64 Hemi light weight, and got changed to a 65 early in 65,then got an altered wheelbase conversion after that. The name also changed from Long Gone to the Funny Car.
