I have a Cragar bellhousing to adapt my early Caddy 390 to a Ford trans. What clutch fork and throwout bearing do I use? How about a hydraulic throwout bearing?
If the trans is early ford use a cross shaft from a trans that matches your clutch petal. If it is for a later trans I have no clue.
I assume that the adapter is for the 1949 and later ford trans. If so it probably uses a fork from a y-block. Do you have any pics?
A picture of the inside fulcrum or mounting holes for a fulcrum would be helpful. I had a different Cragar adapter bellhousing. The instructions called for a 58 Mercury fork. It was available over the counter when it was made. 50 years later...not so much. You can still get the angle iron fulcrum that Ford used in many of the 50s and 60s cars and trucks. I'd investigate the possibility of mounting one of them in your BH. Then you can find several Ford forks that could work. This is what mine looked like inside.
OK, thanks. I'll have to post some photos over the weekend. This bellhousing nomenclature is all new to me. The bellhousing I have is a Cragar "302" casting.
I have a copy in my files at home of the directions that came with my NOS Cragar 0302 adapter. I used the stock clutch release arm from my 49 Ford as I believe it was the same part number they recommended (55 T-Bird I think???). I also used an 11" Ford truck clutch. I also took a piece of oil impregnated brass and made a longer pilot bushing as the cranks on the 390s never had a provision for the bushing. You will also have to figure out the starter situation as well, but the directions cover it pretty well. I had a Scheifer 176 tooth (#501) flywheel. I am changing PCs at home, but I think I have a copy on my external hard drive (if I don't I will soon.) I'll try and post it this evening. What trans are you planning on using?
Hey, that's the ticket! Thanks for those instructions. I have an aluminum 145 tooth flywheel. Not sure what trans I will use yet. This project has been interesting because of the difficulty in obtaining these oddball aftermarket parts. I was going to install a LaSalle trans, but couldn't find the right adapters at an affordable price. Now that I found this bellhousing, I'll go with a Ford trans which will be my next purchase. Any recommendations? Here are some bellhousing photos in case anyone is interested in what one of these looks like:
