I should've added the smiley face. Believe me, I love an internet arguement as much as the next guy, especially when NJ seems to dominate the opinions, so I wouldn't miss this for the world. My opinions have been stated, I'm gonna watch this one unless I feel the need to jump in...

Please stop sub-framing cars, its just not right its like sucker punching a blind kid, its just not right. I feel like if your guna have a hot rod or custom it should be traditional. i dont wanna get into a huge thing cuz people always argue wit me but if ur guna do it do it right keep it traditional.

When you start paying my expenses then and only then will I even consider what the hell I'm going to do to MY CAR....

You on the other hand can do exactly what you want to do with your car and I wont crititize your decisions.....

good...i believe this site is to post opinions as well as tips and interests. i stated my opinion and dont really care about yours. i said what i wanted and i dont care what your car has or doesnt have. i like tradition and i like things to appear and work as they did back then. end of story

I'll admit I had a front steer 70-81 Camaro/75-79 x-body subframe sitting next to my 55 and gave alot of thought about how it would all work. I've heard from enough people this was a good subframe to use.

First lining everything up I soon realized that the steering gearbox would be right where the radiator was, my column/gearbox assembly would have to be replaced, track width was alot wider and so on and so on. I decided I really didn't want power steering anyway. All of my previous Pontiac hotrods had manual steering . If I were to subframe I think a rear steer 67-69 f-body or 68-74 x- body would have been a better choice.

So my other option was to swap over to a ball joint front end, not that the kingpin front end is bad in design, but when I took it apart, the bushings fell out of the spindle and didn't trust the uprights . I swapped in factory parts(bolt in 58 arms) and added anti dive angle and higher caster. Plus the means to adjust the alignment better with a shim adjustment instead of an eccentric on the upper pivot of the upright.

As long as the donor vehicle is plannned out and installed properly to work than thats fine, cars like the one on the first page should be like a posterchild for wannabe idiots who think they are a builder .

I duno i just like kingpins and i think they are alot stronger than ball joints and that makes a huge difference in jersey land of pot holes that are so deep u can see molten magma. and i think the stock old shit is plenty strong like i said just my opinion i like what i like.

I can't believe ppl use strength for this argument. That makes no difference whether here in NJ or anywhere, drive a military tank around if you are so nervous.

Well since your talking OPINIONS.... take this into consideration... I'm 63 and drove these cars back in the early 60 & yes I lived through the 50's ERA ..... Cars didn't handle worth a damn back then and unless you improve the suspension, brake and power systems on these vehicles they are still death traps on the Piss Poor NJ roads....

Believe me it we had mig guns back then things wouldnt have been so traditional....
Going back I can remember providing C'ed front ends using a Torch and a big ass grinder.... SAWZALL-Plasma Cutter-mig guns... Never heard of those back in the 50's - 60's - 70's .. Body Dollies were nothing more than hammers and a piece of flat and bent steel... Sonny Boy... You have NO IDEA as to what Traditional is.... We at that time were nothing more than 17-20 year olds making our cars low and cool.... If thats traditional .... I don't want to be back there again.......

So that's My Opinion.......... And if you feel like reporting it.... BE MY GUEST..

reporting id never report that...i think its awesome that u lived thru that...but let me tell u something old timer when i was growing up it was my understanding that hot rodders worked with what they had that wasnt much. there wasnt alot of shit available then and thats how i want my car to be. not for comfortability but for the feeling of how it was then. so i respect u and ur opinion and i just like what i like

I have a Camaro subframe under my '40 and it rides nice and drives like it's on rails. Done right it's hard to beat a subframe. This one is narrowed 4 in. and runs 6 cylinder coils.

Just like everything else, if you don't know wtf you are doing, the end result is going to suck.

What's the difference? Next time I go to the hunnert car pile up I'll be on the lookout for the concours de'legance section for all the period correct built hotrods. Everybody else goes home. Build what you like, have fun. haters...
    1. SAFETY. If subframing a car makes it stop faster and handle better good. THe next time you're out driving in traffic and some crazy ass Mom screaming at her basterd kids cuts you off and brakes really hard with her 4 wheel disc antilock braked tin box made in korea... Lets see Real American iron from the 50's vs tin can full of kids? Not a good combo. I like the idea of a traditional car, and I'm building one with that appearance. However I want to be safe on the road, not only for myself, but for everone else as well.

I think subframes are cool but I wear bifocals, so they aren't really an option for me...
