My psychiatrist, who has an old car, suggested I join this site as part of my therapy. Please Help if you can. Ques. What is the best way to remove the roof drip rail molding on my 67 Chevelle 396 S.S without damaging it. I am prepping this car for a painting. Is there any special tool needed that I can make or buy?
old style bottle opener, with the end taped up. work carefully and slowly from the back. make sure it's a bottle opener, not a can opener...
Retired08- Can you give an update as to how you make out with the technique. I'm looking at doing th same thing in a few months and I have never done it before either. Thanks and good luck.
the best tool you can have is patience. if it was me id just shave the damn drip rails off, but im a lil nutty @ times
Retired08, This site is great for 64 and earlier traditional style rods and customs, and many of the techniques discussed here cross over into other cars such as your Chevelle. However, that being said, and as much as I love the Jalopy Journal / H.A.M.B., you might find more detailed information and ***istance regarding various aspects of your 67 Chevelle on www.chevytalk.com. Check it out. Good luck with your project.
How much do the******s make, and how do you intend to remit the funds? Actually, I would think that the sequence is wrong. Most folks need therapy after joining this site.
OH MY at first i thought you were shaving the drip rails off completely i almost fainted! one time we cut a piece of wood & used it to remove the 'moulding' on A chevelle.
Monsterflake got it right. Tape up an old BOTTLE opener and peel the moulding off from the bottom. Start at one end and work it off slowly, moving along to the other end. It probably will require two or three p***es to get it off.
Save some $$$, get rid of the shrink & get a motorcycle. Never see a Motorcycle parked at a shrinks office. Keep the Chevelle. Lucky667
That does work, I've done it quite a few times. When you're done, the moulding might have a slight bow to it, but it will return to it's normal shape when reinstalled. Don't let fill primer or paint get too built up on the rail or it'll chip off when you go to put the trim back on. And in the end, if you munch up the trim, you can buy new stuff cheap enough. The HAMB is more about old hot rods and customs, but this is a tech tip that could apply to a lot of those cars.

Great tips, I was about to try removing mine from the '56. If there's a bit of rust/corrosion it might help to use a rust penetrant (PB Blaster, etc.) while working the BOTTLE opener along the bottom? Mine's almost fused to the drip rail, I tried using just a pair of pliers (jaws wrapped with tape) and large screwdriver. The rust penetrant seemed to help loosen the rusty crud. And yeah, I don't think this applies only to the pre '64 cars, it's a nice and easy tech tip that can be used on any car with drip rail moldings. Thanks!
