So, I've got a pretty nice set of 32-35 ford cross spoke wheels that I'm looking to use on my 29 ford project. I want to install some old school juice brakes on the car. I have a set of 40 ford backing plates, and was looking at thompson's garage rebuild kit and a set of 12X2 drums. I'm new to this so I thought I would make things simple this go around instead of tracking down parts I'm not sure I will or could use. Some one told me that these drums will not work with the 32-35 cross spoke wheels. They said that the wheels will not be able to swallow the drums. I thought I saw this set up all the time, is there some spacer I'm forgetting about?
What? IF you have a banjo rearend and a set of 40 brakes, hubs/drums, all you need is the wheel spacers that Andy in Kerrville TX makes and you're in business. 32 wheels are 18". 33-34 wheels are 17". 35 wheels are 16". So, what do you have?
so looked into this a bit more myself. I suppose I will need to run some 1-1/2" spacers to accommodate the 35 cross spokes. Some one tell me if this is sounding wacky. If not does anyone know of a good place to aquire a set of 5-1/2" X 5-1/2" 1-1/2" spacers?
There were "tabs" of '35 Ford brake drums that weren't on later juice brake cars. these spacers allow the Ford wires to sit squarely on the juice drom. Do a search on this forum for "Ford wire wheel spacer" and you'll find what you need to know as this has been discussed a lot...
do some searches on here ....wire wheels mount on two diff. surfaces at the same time....look on any pre 36 drum you will see tabs (standoffs) around the center....its an easy fix you wont need thick spacers...do a search and take your time ....
Go to mtcarproducts.com and look under "wheel support". They are just a small part (but your wheels may fall off without it). Some one will probably post how to make them yourself or check the archives here and at fordbarn.com. Charlie Stephens
