Yesterday I fired up my '50 Ford and it ran like a champ. I drove it over to the barber shop...no problem. Stopped by the hardware store...no problem. Restarting the car...problem. Never restarted and I ended up having my friend tow me home. Considering that I had been farting around with the carb, I thought my problem lied there. So I took the carb off, took it apart to make sure everything was within spec and the float wasn't stuck. I bolted it up, pushed the button and it started right up. I drove it about 10 miles...no problem.
This morning I got up, drove it to the coffee shop (ran better than it ever had), came home and my buddy asked me to take him for a spin (30 minutes after returnign from coffee shop). I went by and picked him up and the car was running excellent! About 20 minutes into the drive the car started dogging out when I accelerated fast. It idled perfect, it revved out perfect but under a load (in all gears) it bogged down.
Can anyone lend some advise to an FNG?
    Here's what I tried:
-Checked the bolts on the carb
    -played with the timing
-Checked the fuel filter for water
    Thanks!!!

Fuel pump? Vapour lock? Sealed gas cap? Just a few ideas. Flatheads were prone to vapour lock - but usually they don't run at all when that happens.

Check your fuel line blow air from behind fuel pump gas line could be cloging up also check rubber gas line where it bolts up to fuel pump if old it could be closing up when pump trys to pull fuel. Also if you have the glass boel on your pump make sure it is sealed good as it will draw air if not.Its the little thingf that will drive you crazy.

Had that happen to me in Ol Blue, my 49. After being towed home a couple times pulled the tank. There was a piece of solder floating around in there ( been there from day one I guess ) that would get stuck in the outlet tube ( no socks back then ) nealy drove me nuts. Pulled the tank shook it out no prob since. Just a thought.

If you pour gas right into the carb...and it starts...or wants to kick over...then you may have a vapor lock problem like explained befor. Introduce gas like that and it'll tell ya right away.

Vapor lock? Hummmm...come to think of it, when I started it yesterday, it hesitated for a second and the windshield wipers went up (which are run off vacuum, right?).
I'm still new to this stuff...what do I do to prevent vapor lock?

MBL, it starts and idles fine...it even revs up great...just under a load it bogs out. I'm going to check the rubber lines like someone mentioned further up the post. That sounds plausable!

Right on...I misunderstood...I think it could still be fuel pump related...how much vacuum do you have running off of it?

I have the same problem...it started after I put a Pertronix ing. module in. futzed with the carb, tried timing adjustments, new fuel pump ,etc. I am changing back to points, and see if that is the problem. It starts fine, idles fine, runs flat or downhill ok. On a hill,it just lays down, sputters, pops, almost dies. I'll let you know what I find. Glenn

If I understand you right, it's hesitating under a load? What' the intake, carbs, dizzy, that you are running? Sounds like a vacuum problem.Check your advance on the dizzy, set it back or forward a bit , depending again on the set up that your running. I had a hell of a time with this trying to get a Sharp super intake to work with 2 97s and the stock dizzy, fixed it once I ran 2 94s and a vacuum line to the intkae.

As far as the no-starts, look for vapor lock, try a electric fuel pump, and a regulator. Set the regulator down to 2-2.5 and you should be good. Kinda sounds like it might be a couple things going on here at once.

A quickie test when gas mixture is suspected: Pull out the choke and see if you get a brief improvement. If not, try a quick run with vac line to wiper AND aircleaner off. If neither helps, start thinking ignition.
