There is a local guy that has 2 331 Hemi motors for sale. One is a 54 331 which he said has a broken exhaust valve, from him trying to free it up. The other is a 55 331 that is complete, pulled by him from the car. Both engines turn over and are not stuck. He also has a trans for each motor, one of them has been rebuilt. Both motors originally came with 4 barrel intakes, which are included. He also has a vintage Weiand Drag Star 6x2 intake with a box of 10-12 Holley 94 carbs that is included and he has an extra set of 55 heads. He is asking $1500 for everything. Is it worth it or should I talk him down? Not real familiar with the prices of this stuff so your input is appreciated. Thanks, CTJ.

  2. buy em...then call me and i'll help ya decide which one i want:D...they're not getting cheaper, and they ain't making em no more...i been trying to find a "deal" on one for my topo...i hate it when i see one posted in michigan...oh. wait....this is the first hemi action i think i have seen in mich since i joined the Hamb....but seriously, $1500 for 2 unstuck hemi's should be a good deal i think....or should i just say if i had $1500 to spend, i would have bought them and then posted about it........

Buy them, That's a screaming deal. I might still try and talk him down, but if he doesn't move on the price I think I would pay what he's asking . The carbs and intake alone are worth upwards of $1000 depending upon if the carbs are complete and their overall condition.

I would definetly go for it. 2 engines 2 trans and a bunch of bonus parts. Sounds like a good deal to me

Considering that the intake is a minimum $500 item and the Holley cores are in the $50 each....the math is not real complicated. You should be able to net a free engine out of the deal, and have money in your pocket.

I'd say it was a good deal. 331 had an extended bellhousing until mid 54 so is both without the extended bellhousing? Anyway with all the parts I would grab it.

Yes, The 54 is a later model without the extended bellhousing. I'm going over there tomorrow to try and talk him down. Either way I'm sure it's all coming home with me... CTJ

Hello Chop Top, regarding hemi stuff I have noticed prices have been trending down a bit. If you look at hot heads swap meet site there are
quite a lot of motors and parts that are staying listed for prolonged periods of time. I think the economy is limiting folks hobby type cash
spending. I have seen 4 barrel intakes listed for way less than a hundred dollars. Also any carb you may acquire will probably need at least a rebuild
kit and they are not cheap these days. I bought a complete 354 a couple of years ago and the rebuild costs are going to be quite costly. I am not trying to discourage you, but I think price negotiation is in order.

economy or no economy....even if you gotta stash the stuff for a bit before you can get top dollar outta the stuff you aint gonna use it's still worth it...I'd buy em at asking personally...and try and talk him down for sport

I appreciate the advice. I have been looking at rebuild kits for the motors and carbs, they are pricey. I plan on going with all of the cash and trying to talk him down. I will let you know how it goes and post some pics when I get it home. CTJ

If you do your research you can build things for reasonable. Lots of information here!!

That guy is offering that stuff at a great price (based on your description). I wouldn't expect him to move it for much lower.

I planned on offering $1200. If he bites, cool. If not, maybe he will counteroffer somewhere in the middle. Even if I pay asking price it sounds like I'll be getting a deal... CTJ

Good advice. They'll damned well appreciate more than your savings account, CDs, or 401K.

Ever p***ed on something and then went back to see if it was gone, Buy now, reason it out later, you will be very happy when you own a hemi. You don't pay to much for something, you just bought it 5 years to soon. Dan :)

Well, I went out there today to look at the stuff. It was exactly as described. 1954 4 barrel 331 with trans from a New Yorker, 1955 331 4 barrel with trans from an Imperial Crown, Weiand Drag Star 6x2 intake and he had 14 Holley 94 carbs to go with it!!! Also got an extra set of 1955 heads, the generators and starters and even the original air cleaner from the 1954 engine. Both engines turned over and were complete from carb to oil pan. He also included the block off plates to run only 2 carbs on the 6x2 and an oil filter adapter. I tried to talk him down and he got pissed but we settled at $1450.00 out the door. He even included a Hemi reference manual and then helped me load it all up. I will post pics later tonight or tomorrow. CTJ
