Here is the scenario. I bought a pair of 15X10 US Indy rims about a week ago. I am still waiting for them to arrive. I have been looking for a second set of 15X10 US Indy's, but haven't been able to locate any the past week. I am still keeping my eyes peeled and on the lookout. Yesterday, however, I located a pair of ansen sprint 15X10 rims. From the pictures, they look exactly the same as the US Indy rims...but I could be wrong. I might end up buying the ansens as my second set of rims, but it all depends on the following question, so I need the forum's help. Are there any differences between US Indy slot mags, and Ansen Sprint slot mags...other than the brand name? Here is a picture of both...I can't tell the difference between the two...is there any?? Ansen: US Indy:
I've owned both, and there is a visual difference. In your photos I can see that the step where the curved center web starts is smaller on the lower photo and larger on the upper photo. I believe there's a difference in the way the flat around the bolt holes transitions into the curved web. If you hadn't identified the photos I would have picked the lower photo to be the Ansens and the upper photo to be the Indys. Plus the cap looks more like an Indy cap. Of course it's been 30+years...
Damn, I might have to narrow my search down to only the US Indys. There has to be someone on this board who has a set of both the ansens and the us indys. Care to compare?
I've used both on my g***er. I'm not partial to either as far as appearance, but I do prefer the more solid looking hub area (where the lug studs come through) in the U.S. Indys.
I am trying to figure out if it is detectable to the naked eye to have a set of ansens on the front, and a set of us indys on the rear. I am building a flared 1976 corvette...so it would look funny if it was detectable by the eye.
I have Torq thrust Mags on my 33 pickup..Shelby center caps on 1 side and Amercian racing on the other. No one in the last 18 years has mentioned it to me.More to look at than the wheels.... There is not enough difference in the Slot wheels that anyone is going to notice.
Why does it matter if both pairs of rear wheels match? I think the questions should be if they match your front wheels?
That's what I meant. I have a pair of matching US indy wheels for the rear of the vette. Now I am looking for a pair of US Indys for the front of the car. I just found a set of ansens while searching the net, and they appear to be the exact size I need. My question was regarding installing a matching pair of ansens on the front, then a matching pair of us indys on the rear...will it be a noticeable difference?
I don't think anyone will spot the diffrence if you don't tell them, I have often noticed small diffrences in diffrent batch numbers of slot mag , but polished up and detailed they look fine.
Have you ever gone to a swap meet and found that there is one item that seems to be common at every other booth? That was the case about three years ago at Portland. Slotted mags were every where. A friend needed some narrow ones and I could only find one pair in the whole place the next year and they were 10" wide. I have always wanted to try putting different wheels on opposite sides of my car and see how long it would take for someone to notice.
Why mount them front and rear? Mount them right and left. Front and rear I'd probably notice, left and right I wouldn't especially if the caps were all the same. Are the backspacings all 3-3/4?
As mentioned, if you do mix, do a side-side not a front-back. I'm betting they'll somehow be a tiny bit different. Width or backspace will be 1/4" different, that kind of thing. Look close at the top mag, there's that 1" wide flat face where it transitions from the dish to the spoked hub. Top mag has a slight lip on the transition that's not present on the bottom mag. good luck, cool car
Looking at that top wheel again, I see the 'Ansen' in red on the cap. That must be a later wheel, I'm accustomed to the silver and black Ansen cap. The Us Indy's are red white and blue. The design may have changed a bit, different era wheels from Ansen may look different as Thunderrace noted.
I have dramatically different wheels on both sides of my 3 axle trailer. Spun Welds on one side, forged Welds on the other. Bought it that way. Never noticed until I was working on it and had all the wheels off at the same time! duh- When I point it out, everyone has to go back and walk around both sides before they believe me. Of course, it's just a trailer, wheels are more important on a car.
The front wheels I need in 4'' backspacing. The rears are 3.5'' backspacing...I can't mix them side to side...then I'll have to mess with spacers to get the one side to fit the flare like if it had a 4'' backspace. I guess I will just have to find another set of US Indy's (which will take some patience). Thanks for all the help so far - I really appreciate it. This is a great forum. Hey, Just out of curiosity have you mounted the rear wheels? Do they clear the calipers? Clear the parking break cable? Bill
Well you could do what we did back in the late 40's when it was hard to get whitewalls. Put the Indys on one side of the car and the Ansens on the other side.
The guy I bought them from tested the fit of them on his 71 vette. He said the clearance was tight, but they do fit the wheel and have clearance.
Good call Back when I was a teen I had a 67 Dodge Charger. I had slotted mags on one side of the car and Torque Thrusts on the other side. You can only see one side of the car at one time. It was really amazing how many people never noticed.........lol Bobby
