I'm building an A-Sedan with a 331 Hemi and have the choice of putting a Muncie 4 Speed in vs. a 1932-48 Ford transmission...? I have a Muncie 4 in another rod and believe them to be as tough as any trans, but i know nothing about the parts availability or viability of the '32-48 Ford trans. Any help is much appreciated.
IMO only reason to use the old ford trans is if you're living in an era where the muncie hadn't been invented, or if you're never gonna pop the clutch. Good luck
If your going to cruise it with relatively minimal abuse then the Ford would probably do ok.......aside from that, Muncie all the way. That's just my opinion though, and i have never run an early Ford trans, only have friends who have..But i've seen some real carnage happen when abused.. That same abuse in a Muncie would be like a sunday drive to church I have run many Muncie's though with great luck in the longevity dept..
I would probably go with the muncie 4 speed, its alot more durable than a top loader. The only reason they ran those is because thats all that they had. They are not strong transmissions at all. Go easy on it if you put it in your hot rod.
The Ford trans is a good trans, for what it is and when it was made. Parts are out there but there is a reason many people choose a Muncie; because they are one tough sum*****. If you want to have minimal worries, but a Muncie behind that Hemi and let her rip, just my $.02.
Thanks, i guess we can pull this post now... the only reason i asked is because i found a Cragar adapter for the early ford trans on ebay for half the price of a new muncie adapter. Muncie will remain in the plans.
