O/T Any of you guys collectors of other stuff?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, Jul 30, 2007.

  1. My dad passed away last September at the age of 92 and my sibs and I along with Mom are wading through a life-time of his "collectibles". My advice to you all is to get what you can now for what you have. A day will come when some total stranger who won't care for your stuff as much as you do now will end up with it. (I'm just as much to blame...comics collector.)

This brings up what are to me the fundamental rules of collecting, whether it be 1:1 hot rods or Hot Wheels or art or whatever. First, enjoy your collection while you have it. Otherwise you wasted all your time and money. Second, even though it's just "stuff" and therefore not as important as people, but for many of us it may represent a significant investment of the family's resources over time and they we owe it to our family to prepare them for what happens when we're gone. Either selling it off or giving it away before you go, or having it appraised so that your kids don't get ripped off, or turning your kids into colectors so that they carry on the tradition. One of those things is a 'must do.'

You guys hit the nail on the head! My wife and kids know a lot of my stuff is valuable, but they have no idea how much it really is worth. My wife has been helping me with ebay for a while, so she is getting pretty good at researching items. My feeling is, if they have absolutely no interest in it now, and probably won't in the future, it's not worth keeping if I too have no interest in it any more. I have enjoyed collecting every item over the years, but it is fun to see something that is a "Grail" item to another collector go to good hands, and make them happy too! After you accumulate so much, it kind of gets to be overkill anyways. Our family business has been hard hit this past year, like so many others, so the extra money from my stuff went to good use. I didn't feel bad at all about letting any of it go.

I am of the thought that if it pleases you then GREAT. If you want to collect it as an investment, then maybe stamps or coins are the way to go.

I started a few years ago with a request from my Daughter to restore a 1950's 'dolls pram' she picked up at a swap meet.

Hey , dont laugh!! they have wire wheels , a convertable top that folds down, metal body that usually needs some panel beating as the result of previous young owners using it to haul bricks, rocks, etc! I currently have 4 'Cyclops' brand prams in the shed waiting for my retirement.

  6. I collect trains, planes, and old cars.

    For me it's mainly books;

    Scottish & Irish history
    Fenians and the the IRA
Socio-economics related to Eastern Canada and the Eastern U.S.
Railroads of Ontario (particularly the K&P.R.R.)
    Canadian political history
N.Y. political history (Tamany Hall, R.P. Flower)

Have books from the mid-1700s through about 1925. Not much newer than that. Nothing worth more than $200-$300 each.

A very modest collection of die cast - BMWs and 53-56 Ford pick ups.

CFL Football cards & memoabilia- 1959 through 1992 (including autographed Doug Flutie rookie card)
Blue Jays baseball cards - from their first year through 1992 or so.

Hey Chili Phil, I have a couple of old Kustom R&P amps too, along with a TON of other musical equipment...a bunch of which is oddball. Also play bass and my pride and joy is an '84 Rick 4003. Also have an '85 Fender Performer that is nice and an '85 Katana that only needs the hang tags to be new. Those two Fender basses are oddballs for sure. I remember the Ampeg B-15 amps well, but they have gotten too pricey for me lately. Wish I'd gotten one back in the day and kept it. I drive my wife nuts playing my Rick through an old Silvertone Twin Twelve. lol:D

We have a pretty good little collection of mid-century robot toys and other similar random items. I tend to look for the ones that are missing the original box, or have a spot of rust, a dent, or whatever else makes the "real" collectors avoid them. I like cool crap, but it's gotta be cheap!

  14. I am now collecting Palliard Bolex cameras. So far I have a few decent ones and some junkers. The decent ones are a B8, H8 Reflex, and H16 Reflex. We are starting to make shorts with them instead of my digital equipment.

Every now and then I'd pick up an old pocket watch..but was never to serious about it..most of them were like 30-50 years old.. then recently my grandmother gave me one,she had gotten off this little old lady that used to live next door to her.. She said it never worked in the past 20 years she had it and the lady said it was even longer since she remembered it working, was her husbands.. it was so nice that I thought maybe Id take it to see if it was possible to fix it.. then my 3yr old daughter pics it up and drops it and it started working! When I checked out the serial numbers on the back to a site I found out it was made in 1894..damn thing keeps perfect time and I'm hooked now!

I like anything old, unique and neat. My dad has a box of artifacts and one original light from the GenaFlash flashlight company. A distant relative was the inventor so we have all kinds of original correspondence, patents, engineering diagrams, marketing literature, etc related to this light. It worked by twisting the bottom which created a spring loaded charge that lasted a few minutes. Here is one of the marketing pieces:

My other loves are, custom handmade knives, vintage pipes, walking sticks and all kinds of Indy stuff.

  25. You've got some neat stuff in there. I've got a Mercury Wagon like the one you have there that the pistons work in the engine, and I've never really seen another one until looking at your pictures!

  26. It seems like I'm always kind of pimpin' my blog, but do any of you guys remember the Topps World on Wheels cards from the 50's? My dad gave me his stash when I was a really small kid, and I remember thinking they were pretty neat even back then. I still have them, and they're in surprisingly good shape considering how young I got them and all.

I've always just kept them in a shoe box. I suppose there are better ways to preserve old cards like that. Hopefully my son will enjoy all of this stuff of my dad's and mine when he gets older too. Of course, I never get rid of anything, so he might have some trouble finding a place for all of this crap!
