I got a kick out of the fan comment. Mine was the same way-and noisy as it came up to speed. So one day I decided to fix it-took everything apart (and those things are like a Chinese puzzle); cleaned the fan all up, lubed the bushings, put it back together and its now 3 times as bad as before. But-it DOES catch up.

I've been welding s**** iron together for years. I'm not an expert.
My first machine was a Miller 225 A/C machine, it humbled me.
Next machine was a a little Lincoln 225 A/C-D/C, I became a great welder instantly.
A D/C machine is much easier to weld with for a beginner.
6013 rods are good, But you got to be really good to use them, they will humble you.
6011 rods are good too, anybody can weld with them, me included.
7014 rods are easy to use too.
With practice you could build a complete car with a D/C machine and 1/8" 6011 rods.
    Good Luck.

Buy now. At last summer's s**** prices those old tombstones had +70 bucks worth of copper windings and buss bars. If s**** goes back up you'll have all kinds of compe***ion for those $50 welders, right now not so much. happy welding!

I bought a Craftsman 180 Amp stick welder 40+ years ago, used to have it in a ba*****t and ran the leads out the window to weld directly on cars, welded lots of frames rear spring pads etc. with it. It is built like a tank and I still have it and use it once in a while. Old tech is still good tech!

This a great post. Thanks for this. I just got an old Miller 250 tig/stick. All I've ever done is mig, so I'm looking forward to using it. I got it for a good price. It is big though.

Todd.....You gotta go a long way to beat beat a Lincoln tombstone, or a Miller thunderbolt, or a Forney. They were made so good most of them are still around. For the best used value , they can't be beat. A 100 bucks for a next -to-new one is a fair and common price. Good luck.............Pork
