A hot sterile needle does the trick. Believe me, when you spurt that blood out from under that nail it will be like Christmas. If you go to the ER, thats what they do, drill it and squeeze it. It hurts for a second and then its like someone whos been standing on your toe stepping off. The throb will go away too. Its a blood blister under your nail and any blood blister is relieved the same way, you have to drain it or its going to throb for days.

The technical term for what you're referring to is a "subungual hematoma". The procedure to make it more comfortable is called a "window in nail", and is usually done with a red hot paper clip, or what amounts to a relabeled micro circuit soldering gun. Here's the real concern. You must make sure you have not fractured the distal phalanx (end of the finger); otherwise, when you do the window in nail, you essentially just made a simple fracture a compound fracture. IF bone gets infected, it's not easy to treat, and can be a lenthy process. So, get it X-rayed, get yourself covered medically (antibiotics and pain meds), and only practice self treatment as a last resort. Butch/56sedandelivery.

    Try this...

Put about 4 (5 if you can) ice cubes in your mouth then stick your left hand thumb up your butt and you right hand thumb under your left arm pit. Won't help the swelling any... but it will prevent more smashed fingers.

I have tried the hot needle and don't much care for it. I like to go over to the bench grinder and grind a small hole in the nail. It doesn't hurt as much and it is quicker!

A couple years ago my buddy at work smashed my social finger . End of my finger was broken in four pieces and turned sideways about 45 degrees. Doc had to remove the nail, fix the break with a pin, then stitched the nail back on to protect it.

I use a small file and file a hole(gouge) through it slowly. thats the least painful.
    second is the exacto knife.
third is spinning the drill bit with your fingers #36 max
anf fourth is that hot pin shit. that hurts almost as bad as smashing it:eek:

Stick it in cider........it'll either give you a warm fuzzy feeling or a black eye.

just cut the tip off, thats how i solved it.

  28. Now wait till you forget about it for a minute and cram your hand in your pocket, or try to wipe your butt.

You'll try not to forget about it again after that...but you will.

Does that earn me the dual fingers icon?

Soak the offending finger and nail in fresh DISTILLED turpentine. It'll release some of the soreness and then you can address the nail.
    Good luck and relief soon!
