Pinstriping practice - first piece inside (no laughing)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Probesport, Jan 26, 2009.

  1. I decided I should learn how to pinstripe at some point so after over an hour of practicing lines and curves I did this fat line design, freehand, no grid. It's not great, but a little better than I expected.

Looks good to me...............Practice, practice :)

One thing I like to see on real old striping work done years ago is the really fine lines they did back then. A lot of stuff done today is done way too thick and sort of shows up too much. What I mean is that any one detail on a car should not grab your eye, the cars details and shiny parts should all flow without looking gaudy.

I wish I could take on a project like that. I'd never be able to pin-stripe, my hand shakes too much. Too many years of abusing my brain. Good work!

  5. Looks like a damn fine start mate its just going to take practice, better than i could ever do. Stick with it

Not to bad. There's nothing wrong with using some stabillo pencil lines for some reference though. It does help keep things even.

I made my first attempt at pinstriping this weekend too and I can tell it'll take a lot more practice. I mainly focused on straight lines and curves. There's a lot more to handling a brush than I thought there'd be. It was fun though. Best part is I didn't throw my brush away after the first try (ha ha)!. Gave me a whole new respect for those that do it well and make it look easy. Thanks to Unkl Ian and Rocky Burris for the inspiration to at least try it out.

    LOOKS GOOD!
i practiced over 10 hours straight my first day.
    OVER TEN HOURS!

once you start you have to stay with it. i now dont pick up my brushes sometimes for a month or more. takes me awhile to get back in the groove anymore.

Good start, as everyone has said, practice practice practice
putting a sheet of graph paper under the glass will help with getting a feel for symmetry

  19. looks pretty good to me...was watching guys at GNRS pulling lines and amazed at the speed, symmetry and beauty of their work...definitely an art form and yep...practice, practice, practice

Looks way better than my first try a couple weeks ago! Good job.

  21. Wow! Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, I have been practicing most every night a couple hours. It is becoming addictive, my biggest issue is coming up with designs - my brain isn't trained for symmetry just yet :)

HaHa - at least you had the balls to show your first attempt at pulling lines. There's no way in hell I'd let anyone see the catastrophe I created ... much less take pictures of it. I'm still trying to forget about that. It brought on a whole new level of respect for stripers. Mad props.

Good for you and your first effort.

Take pictures....you don't have to show them to anyone, but it's nice to look back at them after a years worth of practice. It let's you see how far you've come, even if you still pick your current work apart ( like I do :D)

  26. Shit, it looks better than my first attempt (and that was also my last attemept).

Hey Probesport I know exactly what you mean by addictive! I started striping back in November and its like everybody says just keep practicing. Just did my a friends Sportster last week my first job which I did for free cause you have to get your name out there some how. We were both pleased with the out come of the project. So just be encouraged and keep laying down the one shot. Your first stripping peice looks a lot better than mine did. Keep practicing!
