    Hey,

Does anyone know who the artist/s was who did the "Weirdo Series" box
art? My remember ain't goin' back to '63-'64 very well, but there was
"Davey", "Daddy", "Digger"? Killer art work! HAWK Models, no?

    Thanx,

I just picked up "Beach Bunny Catchin' Rays" at the model shop. Made by Hawk Cl***ics. Copyright on box is 2006 so it is not an old kit. I think they are still made.

That was Bill Campbell...he came up with the Weird-Ohs for Hawk....designed the characters, the gags,etc...he did the box art for the Frantics and Silly Surfers, but didn't create the series.....

He also did killer box art for non-Weird-Oh Hawk kits, like "The Bonnie Buggy" ,"The Apache Roadster", "The Alky Saltzer Bonneville roadster", and tons of plane, train, and missile kits...he remained Hawk's only illustrator during their heyday....
He was still with us in 2004, last I read..
    I'm a BIG fan.....

Another thing, it was the Hawk line that got Revell into the "monster" biz.....
The Hawk kits did so well at trade shows that the Glaser's saw $$ in them bloodshot eyes.....
They found some kat named Roth, and the rest is history....

That's correct, I remember I saw the Hawk Weird-oh's kits in the stores first. But Roth & Mouse were already big w/us kids from the car rags & show circuit. The First hot rod monster kit I ever saw (& bought) was Daddy, then Endsville Eddie, then Davey… then it gets fuzzy… That Bill Cambell box art was even better then the kit… to me anyway. By that time the Revel Roth kits were out… the battel for us kids bucks was in full swing.

Monogram jumped in too late with the Mouse kits… Mouse got screwed! He told me that he tried to buy the molds so he could put them out himself… but they told him that they had been distroyed. I wish I had grabbed them before they all got scooped up they were cool too! But they completely disappeared fast before I could even s****e enough money together to grab one of them… Oh well! I didn’t know how good I had it when I was that age… But who dose!

I love those kits .... I have a collection of unbuilt ones from floor to ceiling in my spare closet . Ventura hobbys in L.A. always seem to have them in stock....

    Hey,

Wow, thanks for bringing up Bill Cambell's name and the old "Weird-Oh" models. I forgot 'bout the" Beach Bunny", the "Surfer dude", and
"Drag Nut" The box art was as cool, if not cooler than the models
    themselves!
Did Cambell ever do any cartoon work for magazines?

    Pimpin,
Campbell was an advertising artist sometimes, but Hawk kept him busy for all those years..he didn't do mag cartoons like Millar,Toth,Ellefson,etc...

He truly did create the world of the Weird-Ohs....without hired help!
Dragnut was one of Ed's kits,though....

What I read in an interview with Campbell. He said there was a California Artist (whose name seams to be lost to History) who Sculpted the Silly Surfers & I think even the Frantics. Then brought them to Hawk to see if they would produce them. When Hawk agreed, they put Bill to work on the box art. But the Weird-Ohs (inspired by Roth & Mouse etc.) ware all Bill's baby from the proposal on, at least the concept & the art… I Don't know who sculpted them for the molds.

    Hey,

Does anyone know, did Aurora models get into any of these "weird-
ohesque'' type model themes? I can remember their monster model-
s and they did some really early hot rod themed models?

    P/P,
    Yep.....Aurora did Frankenstein's Flivver, Wolfman's Wagon, Mummy's Chariot,King Kong's Thronester, and Godzilla's Go Kart....
Kool in the monster dept. but not nearly in the same approach as Revell,Hawk,Monogram, or even Lindberg....great memories nonetheless....

Imagine if Aurora had used a designer with hot rod expertise?

ETA: Forgot to add the Drac kit Aurora did... Maybe Dracula's Dragster or something along those lines??

Pictures, please. There's got to be a member or two, or three, with photos and images of these kits; built and unbuilt. Maybe a special topic for the Sunday Models thread but surely ther'd be enough interest in this subject to keep this one open a while.

I think I have pics of most all of them. There were a bunch. Any in particular?

I've got a website of all the Roth Kits here:

Thanks for the link Chaz. Nothing specific, I just think it'd be cool for guys to show what they gots. I always like to see what people have kept around form when they were kids, you know, for those of us who never really quite grow up.

Does anyone know how many different models were in the Weird-Ohs Series that were designed by Campbell? The old one's, from the 60's. I have three of them but would like to find all if I knew how many were made. Thanks!

My brother in law works at a plastics' factory --in the early 70s they were molding some kind of car model kits. When the run was over a Brinks truck with armed guards and model company reps came and collected the molds-took them to the nearest s**** yard and destroyed them themselves with sledge hammers and tossed the bits in the crusher. That's pretty destroyed!
